RB Rotary Club Meeting Minutes for September 18, 2014

The meeting was called to order at 12:30 p.m. by President Don.  The pledge was lead by Tesha Young and Maguy Feghali gave an inspirational thought.  John Kasser was our greeter and introduced all visiting Rotarians and guests.  Maestro John Hawkins was back behind the piano and providing the soundscapes for the meeting.

The family of Rotary report was given and an update was provided on John O’Neill who is recovering nicely and has set a goal of coming back to the club on the evening of our 50th Anniversary celebration in December.  Joe Max provided an artistic joke that incorporated over 6 different well-known painters.  Well-done Joe!

John Kasser announced the opportunity to attend the 2014-15 College Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon with featured speaker Hall of Fame Coach Bobby Knight.  Special guests for this event will be Coach Steve Fisher SDSU and Coach Bill Grier USD.  The luncheon benefits Tender Loving Canines Assistance Dogs.  The luncheon will be held at MCAS Miramar Officer’s Club on October 28, 2014 at 11:30 a.m..  Please see John Kasser for tickets and additional information.  Karen Mortimer, President of the RB Sunrise Club informed us of her club’s fundraiser “RanchoBEERnardo” which will be held on Saturday Sepetember 27, 2014 at Sikes Adobe Farmstead from 3-6 p.m.  Further details and tickets can be purchased at http://ranchobeernardofestival.com .

BHCC will be dark on October 2, 2014 so our meeting will be held at the Boys and Girls Club in 4S Ranch.  Tesha Young will host a vocational lunch where she will detail the mission of the 4S Ranch Club and provide a tour of the facility.  Thank you Tesha!  The Rotary District Conference will be held on October 24, 25, & 26 in Palm Desert.  Additional details and registration can be found at the following link:

Bob Vaughn provided us with a Who am I talk about his career as an Air Traffic Controller/Supervisor/FAA Regional Director.  Bob also comes to our club with a distinguished Rotary pedigree of having been the past president of The La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club as well as the Ramona Rotary Club.  On behalf of your fellow 25+ other past Presidents in our club and all club members, Welcome Bob! You are in good company!

Arilla The Hun continued her pillaging ways and fined many deserving members as well as bringing in a haul of happy bucks this week.  There were lots of happy Rotarians.  Vern Cook then introduced our speaker, Andrew Gracey, VP/Director of Facilities for PETCO.

Andrew provided a summary of all of the building and renovation that PETCO has been doing in preparation for their move to Rancho Bernardo as the site of their national headquarters.  The building is located on via Frontera and at one time was the site of UNISYS.  PETCO placed a capital investment of $31 million to purchase the building and then placed an additional $31 million into construction and upgrades to the property.  2,113.12 tons of waste has been ripped out of the building with a remarkable 98% of that waste was recycled during the renovation and construction.  Andrew routinely demonstrated how PETCO is embedding their brand promise “To nurture better lives for pet owners and their pets” into all facets of their new building to include pet parks and the ability for your pet to come to work with you if you are an employee working there.  The new facility will have the capacity to be the work place for up to 1,000 employees.  Jim Hyldahl found a clever way to relate the speaker gift book to the speaker.  John Kasser provided a closing inspirational thought and President Don adjourned the meeting at 1:30 p.m.
