ROTARY CLUB OF RANCHO BERNARDO
September 30, 2021

The meeting was called to order by Co-President Athenea Luciano, followed by reciting of the Four Way Test. Mike Fuqua gave some examples of “This is America” before leading the Pledge of Allegiance. Dave Brooks gave the Inspirational Message with quotes about Autumn as a season of change. Karen Stelman was our Greeter today, welcoming two guests. Joel Doss led the Welcome Song.

Co-President Alex Robertson announced the Club President Nominee for 2021/2022; Jim Reid has accepted the nomination and thanked the Nominating Committee. Members warmly responded to his nomination. Jim then reminded us of the block of tickets available for the Poway Symphony Orchestra concert on Sunday, November 21st, at 4:00 pm. He had passed around a sign-up sheet, which was mostly full, and said tickets could also be ordered off the website. Jim also said the Center for the Arts could use some volunteers and suggested the Center for the Arts would be a candidate for a matching grant.

Guest Karen Mortimer, from the Sunrise Rotary Club, talked about their “Rancho Beernardo” fundraiser to be held October 23rd. The Club is looking for volunteers to help with the project. She was passing sign-up sheets around. Those persons volunteering to serve beer will need to attend one of two ABC training sessions to be certified. Hours for the fundraiser are 1:00-2:00 for VIP’s and 2:00 -5:00 for general admission.

Jim Hyldahl said an Oaks North Clean up is scheduled for November 6th. He is looking for volunteers. Diane Remick discussed opposition for the location of a convicted sex offender in Rancho Bernardo. She asked members to email opposition to the San Diego Sheriff at sdsafe@sdsheriff.org, to “Oppose the Placement of Douglas Badger at 17863 Frondoso Dr” and WHY, with your name and date. This must be done by Oct.14th, before the next hearing.

Our guest, Katie Hunter, was inducted as the newest member of our Club, receiving her Red Badge from mentor Ron Hunt, and the welcome of Club Members. Members warmly welcomed her.

Today, Arilla St. Laurent said we celebrate the birthdays of several Club Members today with a yummy white cake following singing the birthday song. In discussing “Family of Rotary”, Arilla was circulating sympathy cards for Taylor Cloutier, Miss Rancho Bernardo, whose mother has passed away, and for the family of past Club member, Larry Ciuffo, who died from COVID. Arilla gave no fines, under her Fine Mistress hat, but accepted generous Happy Bucks.

Co-President Alex thanked the volunteers for today: Scribe: Rz Norris, Newsletter: Bill Angus, Sergeant-at-Arms: Bill Brehm, Front desk: Dan Malloy, Pat Chaffee and Joel Doss, and Photographer: James Kaspar.

C0-President Alex introduced Jeffery Sitcov, President and Founder of Doors of Change, an outreach program for homeless San Diego youth ages 17 to 24. For the past 20 years he has been leading a group of committed, caring people (mostly volunteers), with a program designed to instill trust and provide opportunities, and a safe environment for young people living on the streets, many from dysfunctional families. They are offered food and clothing, with programs including music, and art as well as useful skills, case management, identification, health care, housing, employment and more. With the aid of many celebrity musicians’ donations, and volunteer donations, he has established an award winning program for homeless youth in San Diego.

Cheryl Roop made the book presentation.
