Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo – September 15, 2022 Meeting
Scribe Notes by Sandie Dewane

President Alan Turner called the meeting to order and we recited the 4 Way Test with him, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Frank De Francesco’s inspirational message was about smiling and its benefits😊. Greeter Dan Barrios introduced visiting Rotarians and guests, with Joel Doss leading us in the Welcome Song.

President Alan thanked the weekly “behind the scenes” room set-up volunteers Sgt. At Arms Bill Brehm, assisted by Partha Mukhopadhyay and Bob Vaughn, along with Pat Chaffee and Joel Doss, Front Desk; Bill Angus, Newsletter and Sandie Dewane, Scribe.

Alan reminded us of the Club picnic and food drive on Thursday, September 22nd at Lake Poway. We will not be meeting at The Heights that day. Past President Athenea is coordinating the picnic and to date 27 people have registered to attend. Donated food drive items will be delivered to the Community Food Connection in Poway.

Bob Vaughn attempted to auction off 4 tickets to “Ain’t Misbehavin” at the CA Center for the Arts in Escondido. To Bob’s surprise, there was no response from the attendees. He will email everyone instead.

A very special welcome back to Arilla St. Laurent! Not missing a beat, Arilla fined two all-male tables @$5 pp because they couldn’t attract a female to sit with them. Then she asked for and received numerous happy bucks. She hasn’t lost her touch folks!

Gary Saks introduced today’s speaker, Assemblymember Brian Maienschein, who was accompanied by his Chief of Staff Lance Witmondt and Senior Staff Rob Knudsen. Brian quickly covered many topics (much too fast for this Scribe to write it all down). He spoke about the budget and the funding that will benefit San Diego County and California in the areas of Education (TK for every child and priority for CA students to attend CA universities); Climate Change; Mental Health reforms; Rare disease detection for children through Genome testing at Rady Children’s Hospital; Waiving work licenses so active military spouses can work in CA; and requiring 24/7 ankle monitors for all violent sexual predators. Cheryl Roop presented a book for Brian’s signature that will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library.
