President Doug Dawson called the evening meeting to order and we began by reciting the Rotary motto. Dick Norfolk led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and John Goodrich gave the Inspirational Message. Greeter Karen Stelman welcomed Rotary District Governor Mel Gallegos, District Governor- Elect Marta Knight; and Francisco Carrillo, President of the Tijuana Kumiai Club, along with several other guests. Joel Doss led us in singing the Welcome Song.

President Doug thanked today’s volunteers: Front Desk – Joel Doss, Alan Turner and Vern Cook; Set Up Crew – Paul Donick and Pat Chaffee; Photographer – James Kaspar and Scribe – Sandie Dewane.

Mike Fuqua announced that this would be the last time he will be asking for volunteers to sign up for our Vines & Vittles joint fundraiser with the RB Historical Society. Everyone seemed pleased with his announcement judging by the cheers he received! He also encouraged spouses/partners of club members to volunteer.

We were excited to witness a signing ceremony between our Club and the Tijuana Kumiai Club. Presidents Doug Dawson and Francisco Carrillo signed the paperwork as DG Mel Gallegos looked on. At one point, Francisco quipped that “this is almost like my wedding”! Lots of photos were taken and Club banners were happily exchanged. Francisco said that his club looks forward to partnering with our club on projects and events on both sides of the border.
Vern Cook reported that the Kingston Trio will be in concert at the Poway Center for the Arts on November 18th at 3:00 p.m. He asked for a show of hands to see if there was an interest in going as a group, with dinner to follow. He mentioned that Larry Valente had organized a similar event a few years back and everyone enjoyed it.
Arilla St. Laurent informed us that Jim Hyldahl will be having knee replacement surgery.
She also mentioned that a Memorial Open House honoring Joe Max is scheduled for Friday, September 21st, from 4:00 – 7:00 pm. at his home at 16414 Ramada Drive, Rancho Bernardo. It falls on the weekend of his “almost 101st” birthday! His wife, Alberta (Peaches) invites all of us to join her and family in remembering Joe.
Don Glover said that John O’Neill is doing very well in his recovery to which everyone applauded! John is still requesting no visits as this time, but very much appreciates the cards and phone calls he’s been receiving.
Congratulations to Helen and Bob Vaughn who have been married for 58 years!

One of Dave Brooks’ guests tonight was long-time friend Bill, who was responsible for introducing Dave to Rotary. He presented three banners to President Doug representing the clubs in which Bill was a member.

Robin Kaufman, President of the RB Community Council, was another of Dave’s guests. She passed out flyers for the 8th Annual Safety Fair and 1st Annual First Responders Appreciation BBQ scheduled for Saturday, September 29th at the RB Community Park. There is no charge for the Safety Fair which is from 10:00 a.m. – Noon. The BBQ is from 12:30 – 2:00 p.m. and tickets are $8/adults, $5 for children 12 years and younger. Contact RBCommunityCouncil.com for more information.

President Doug gave the following announcements: 9/15 Rotary Leadership Council; 9/18 Club Board of Directors meeting; 9/20 Toby Westbrook will be speaking at the World Affairs Council; 9/27 Last “shorts authorized” meeting outside in the Pavilion; 9/29 Foundation seminar at Grossmont College. (Don Glover said to play it safe, he will get permission from Finemaster John O’Neill before wearing shorts to our remaining meetings!)
Due to time constraints, Arilla’s time was limited in collecting fines and happy bucks.

Pat Chaffee had the pleasure of introducing Robert Lutticken from Abraxas High School. Robert gave an excellent presentation on the history of the Aquaponic Gardening Project from its inception to today. He has worked with the students in the planning, design, construction and in on-going planting, harvesting and maintenance. As the gardens have matured and are producing vegetables and fruit, the produce is donated to needy families in Poway and most recently the students have held a “farmers market” open to the public. (President Doug and our 4 guests from Tijuana toured the Garden prior to tonight’s meeting)

Upcoming Program: September 20 – Betty Mohlenbrock and Marianne Waldrop will present “Empowering Youth Through Shared Reading Experiences”.

President Doug ended with this quote: “Men are like a fine wine. They all start out like grapes, and its our job to stomp on them and keep them in the dark until they mature into something you’d want to have dinner with”. On that note, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
