Rotary Highlights – October 17, 2013 Meeting

President Gary Saks called the meeting to order.  Paul Donick led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Ron Hunt gave the Invocation.  Charley Crew was our greeter and welcomed two guests.  Gary thanked Paul, Ron and Charley for volunteering today, along with the set-up crew: Vern Cook, Bill Bonner, Paul Donick, Joe Max.  Scribe Sandie Dewane.

Happy Birthday to our October “babies”:  Don Glover, Arilla St. Laurent and Suzie Lisio. From the sounds of the crinkling of candy wrappers, everyone enjoyed the Birthday/Halloween goodie bags provided by Sandie and Belmont Village.

Benita Page reported that a long-time member of our club, Bil Brown is at Casa de las Campana’s skilled nursing and is not doing well.  His wife recently passed away.  She mentioned that he would appreciate visits and/or cards from us.

John Goodrich announced that the next District Conference will be held at the Friendship House in Balboa Park.  There will be a continuous slide show with photos of the District’s Rotary club activities throughout the years.  John mentioned that since our club has 80% of the photos, we should recognize many of the people in the slide show.  He encouraged us to attend and we can register online.

Dave Brooks reminded us of the RB Community Foundation annual Thanksgiving Luncheon on November 26th at the Rancho Bernardo Inn.  The cost is $50 per person and we are hoping to have two tables from our Club.  This year 20 organizations will benefit by receiving awards totaling $54,000.

Karen Stelman, along with Frances Blair’s husband, Ernie, will be working on the Poinsettia drive.  The plants are $13 and 100% of the proceeds go to military families.  An order sheet was passed around.

Three of our members bravely talked about nicknames they have had as kids and adults.  Frances Blair, Arilla St. Laurent and Marty Judge shared their stories with us.

On behalf of the Rotary Foundation and President Gary Saks, Charley Crew presented a matching gift donation in the amount of $500 to Marilyn Greenblatt, Coordinator of Rides & Smiles.

Our ever-so-handsome Fine Master, John O’Neill extracted fines and happy bucks from the following:  Dave Brooks, Bill Angus, Don Glover, Dan Malloy, Gary Saks, Maureen  Rouleau, Vern Cook, Jim Hyldahl (for eating John’s Hershey bar); Arilla St. Laurent, Paul Donick and Suzie Lisio.  Thanks everyone!

Kathleen Smith introduced Mark Berger, President & CEO of Partnerships with Industry who gave an impressive presentation about his organization.  PWI, is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit agency that provides job preparation, job placement and on-going workplace support for adults with disabilities.   PWI provides over 200 business partners with a cost-effective, well-trained and dependable work force for their different business needs.  Jim Hyldahl presented the speaker’s gift.

Next week’s program will be Nuvi Mehta from the San Diego Symphony.

President Gary left us with a thought for the day:  “Life sometimes isn’t fair, but it’s still good.”

The meeting was adjourned.

Respectfully submitted,
