October 8, 2020

President Alex opened the meeting at 5:30 p.m. by introducing Mike Stelman who led us in the pledge, followed by Phil Warner whose Inspirational Message stated that "Adversity leads to opportunity". John Goodrich was our Virtual Greeter who welcomed 5 spouses and one mother, Mary Beth, who joined her son Joel tonite.
Then we all got to hear Joel sing the welcome song!
Alex thanked our volunteers: Set up Zoom, Mike Fuqua, Scribe is Karen Stelman and Newsletter Bill Angus.
Arilla St. Laurent who does Family of Rotary, told us that Joel is recovering nicely from surgery on his neck but is facing a second surgery in the near future. On a sadder note, she announced that Terry Hecks' brother was involved in a serious car accident. There were no other details but a card to Terry would be a nice idea to let his family know we are thinking about them and praying for his brother to have a full recovery. Then Arilla asked who celebrated birthdays in Sept and many members raised their hands and told the date....but not their age!
Our Fine Master, John O'Neill, had many volunteers to add another successful week of donations on top of $649 collected last week. Treasurer Pat Chaffee is very happy!

John Goodrich had the honor of inviting and introducing our speaker, Peter Densmore who is a Ranger at Bryce Canyon National Park. Bryce Canyon is very unique and beautiful beyond words. The Colorado Plateau is 135,000 square miles. It's bordered by Nevada on the North, the Sierra Nevada Mountains on the West and the Rocky Mountains on the East. There is everything from high Volcanic peaks as high as 13,000 feet to deep canyons carved out by forest runoff.
The Colorado River flows right through the middle of the park, carving out the Grand Canyon 6 million years ago, on the way to the Gulf of California. It first started forming this canyon 70 million years ago. It's believed to have supported
dinosaurs up to 50 million years ago. Layers of sedimentary rock show cases a huge variety of shapes and sizes. There are numerous hiking trails but they are only open during summer months. There is also snow in the higher elevations and it offers a winter wonderland but cold weather makes it pretty uncomfortable for outdoor activities. The canyon was named for a gentleman that settled there with his family for 5 years. His name was Ebinezer Bryce who arrived in 1870 and left because of the extreme cold. They also had 12 children who probably complained
the whole time!

We owe a great deal of gratitude for John Goodrich being able to arrange this presentation. It was fascinating. I had the good fortune of going their for a short vacation. It's hard to describe its beauty but I hope many of you will have the opportunity to vacation there. My thanks to Mike Fuqua for recording this!
Last minute comments and announcements:
John O'Neill promoted The Couch Potato fund raiser again and asked everyone to sign up with at least one of the three businesses we are approved with:
Ralphs, Amazon Smile, and Major Market. There are instructions available on the
Rotary web site or you can call any of the committee members and they can help:
Karen Stelman, Arilla St. Laurent, John O'Neill or Dave Brooks. It's simple, ez and doesn't cost you any money out of pocket as you will be doing your normal shopping. Encourage friends and relatives to join too. The proceeds benefit the Rotary Foundation. Thanks for your consideration!
Shirley Napierala is heading up Adopt a Family for the holidays again and is asking for donations to raise money to be given to under privileged families identified by the Poway Unified School District. Over 500 families are on the list and we have supported this program for many years. Please help out if you can.
Smokin' Jim is back at it...cooking his now famous salmon and bacon for those who would like to donate to the Club OR Foundation. You can choose to send in $25 or $50, depending on how much you order. Just email Jim and give him your order and arrange a time for delivery. He does this out of the goodness of his heart (plus he loves to bbq)! He also told us how he cures the bacon. It's quite a process but well worth it.

Don Glover has been putting together an event to highlight the World Wide Polio Awareness Project and it's going to be so much fun. He's asking anyone interested in sky diving on Oct. 31st to let him know. He has about 6 people but would like to have 12 jumpers. The rest of us can come and watch (that would be me)! You can also order End Polio Now shirts by calling him ASAP so he can order more. They are only $15 and it would be great to have us all decked out on our red Rotary shirts to support this world wide Rotary awareness project. This will be a one of a kind event and all are welcome to attend. Don will put out more details shortly or give him a call.
Our next meeting will be October 15th at 11 a.m. on Zoom. Our speaker will be Susan Callery, NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Feel free to invite any guests you think might like this presentation!
Yours in Rotary, Karen Stelman
