Meeting Minutes
October 6, 2022
President Alan Turner shared the podium with RB Sunrise Rotary President Laura Mello who rang the bell to open our meeting and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. We had 66 attending this special evening including members of the RB Sunrise and Ramona clubs. We also had a very special guest from Club 33: District Governor Chuck Pretto.
Past District Governor Carl Kruse led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. DG Chuck inspired us with a story about himself. In late 2020 the pandemic was affecting his business and he was having a difficult time and staying at home a lot. Then he was told that a senior center in Vista needed people to administer vaccine shots. He drove to Vista, which was an hour from his house. He really enjoyed volunteering there and knew that he had to be with people. Putting Service Above Self helped him immensely.
Alan asked all our guests to stand, and Joel led us in a rousing rendition of our welcome song.
Laura asked all Rotarians to stand and then asked them to sit down as she called out and increased the number of years of Rotary membership. Gary Saks was the last one standing at 47 years!
Our first announcement was from Jim Hyldahl and President-elect Jim Reid. They told us the Poway Symphony will be performing the first concert of this season on Sunday, November 20th at the Poway Center for Performing Arts. Purchase tickets at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts box office by calling 858-748-0505 or online at www.powaycenter.com . Box office open Fri 12-5, Sat 10-3 and one hour before the concert.
Ken Heinz announced that we are sponsoring the Rotary Bowl, a long-standing rivalry between the football teams of RB High School and Mount Carmel High School. You can just see the trophy to the left of Ken in the picture below. The game will be held on Friday, October 14th at RBHS. He encouraged us to attend the game and arrive by 6:30 pm. We will have a Rotary block of seats hopefully on the RB side (it is also Homecoming).
Laura announced that Rancho BEERnardo, the RB Sunrise Fundraiser, will be held on Saturday, October 22nd. She asked us to spread the word to all beer drinkers. Several of our club members will be volunteers at the event.
Immediate Past President Athena Luciano announced that there will be a house building event in Tecate in December. We will caravan down. She also said there will be a club social event at Koi Zen Winery on the evening of December 15th. It will be the club meeting that day.
Fine Master John O’Neill collected many Happy Bucks, all of which went to Polio Plus.
In the Family of Rotary, Cathy Glover told us why Don has not been able to attend club meetings. His prostate cancer has returned even though his prostate was removed in 2010. He is being treated to shrink the tumor and also for pain management.
President Alan introduced our speaker Jordan Harrison. Jordan challenged us by asking us “are you well?” and “how do you know?” He showed an inspiring video of Beyonce singing “I Was Here” in the UN General Assembly Hall. He spoke about overcoming trauma and learning how to cope.
As speaker’s gifts, Jordan signed a book entitled “A Deep Dive into the Sea” which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library and a wheelchair from RB Sunrise that will be donated in in Africa his honor.
Alan adjourned today’s meeting at 7:10 pm.
