RANCHO BERNARDO ROTARY CLUB
October 4,2018
President Doug called the meeting to order, and led the Club in reciting the Rotary Four Way Test.

The salute the flag was led by John Goodrich, and followed by the Inspirational Message given by Brian Flaherty.

The Greeter today, John Harris, introduced three visiting Rotarians, as well as Club member guests and our speakers. John also led the Welcome Song. President Doug thanked the Volunteers for today: Joel Doss, Don Glover and Dick Norfolk at the front desk, those members who helped with set-up, Scribe Rz Norris, and Photographer James Kaspar.

Dan Malloy, a longtime member, gave a “Who Am I?” update talk. Dan is a CPA who has been actively involved in Club and Foundation accounting and auditing, and will do the accounting for the Club’s Vines and Vittles project for next July, which is already in the planning stages.

Benita Page spoke about a project to raise money for the STEM youth enrichment program in the Poway School District. This would allow students a spot in the summer program who otherwise could not afford it. For each gift donate by Club members, the Club Foundation will donate a matching gift. Contact Benita if you wish to contribute.

Vern Cook reminded us of the upcoming performance of the Kingston Trio at the Poway Center for Performing Arts on Nov. 18th at 3:00. He passed around a signup sheet for those interested in attending. Cost is $41.

Alex Robertson is looking for Volunteers to help with training homeless children teaching them job interview training. Don Glover reminded us of the upcoming workday in Oaks North. A Pizza lunch will be provided, as well as the opportunity to also get rid of personal items no longer in use.
Rotarian guests Gordy Erickson and Craig Brown spoke briefly on the Sunrise Club’s Oct. 20th “Beernardo” activity at Webb Lake Park. They also talked of the need for their club and our club to work together on future projects. President Doug reminded us of the Foundation Gala on Nov. 15th.
Karen Stelman gave the Family of Rotary update: John O’Neill is doing well in his recovery from back surgery. Jim Hyldahl will be having a knee replacement surgery at the end of the month. Francie Barrios is recovering nicely from knee replacement surgery.

Susan King put on the “Fine Master” hat today, but issued no fines! Lots of Happy Bucks were shared, with several acknowledging how we will miss Frances Blair when she and Ernie move to Texas.

Following a “technical time out”, Mira Bozanich (back from a month in Croatia) introduced our speaker, Samantha Blaz. Samantha is the director of Donor Development for Life Sharing, and told us about the need for, and how to arrange for, organ donation (giving and receiving). Michael Adams also spoke. He is a double lung transplant recipient who told us of his struggle to receive new lungs, and how they have changed his life. Jim Hyldahl presented our speakers gift: “Living Through the Arib/Israeli War since 1948”.
