Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo
October 25, 2018 Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane
President Doug Dawson called the meeting to order.  John Kasser led us in the Pledge of Allegiance after sharing some humorous stories regarding the flag.  Charley Crew gave today’s inspirational message.
Greeter Scott Lawn was busy welcoming numerous visiting Rotarians and guests.  He introduced District Governor Mel Gallegos and his wife, Judy Gallegos; Past District Governors Scott Carr and Pam Russell, other visiting Rotarians and 5 guests.  Joel Doss led us in singing the Welcome Song.
President Doug thanked the following volunteers:  Front Desk-  Joel Doss, Gary Saks, John Goodrich, Toby Westlake;  Set Up Crew - Paul Donick, Jim Reid; Photographer - James Kaspar; Pianist - John Hawkins; Scribe – Sandie Dewane.  Meeting Organizer, John O’Neill, received a rousing round of applause (and some boos) for his return to the Club after 8 weeks.  Welcome back John 😊.
Announcements:  Dave Brooks reported that the RB Community Foundation Thanksgiving Luncheon is scheduled on Friday, November 16th at the RB Inn.  Tickets are $50 each.  If you would like to attend, please give Dave a check for $50 at one of our next meetings.  So far, we have 22 members signed up.  We just need 8 more to have three complete tables.  Shirley Napierala mentioned that she has placed an order for Rotary shirts.
We passed the hat for cash and checks in honor of Polio Day and will repeat next week as well.    The RB News Journal ran a photo of our Twin Club Venture with Rotario Tijuana Kumiai this week.  Carmel Mountain High School is a need of an old working PC computer (not Apple) to be used in its computer security class.  All Committee Chairs should let Doug or Vern Cook know asap about any holiday request plans they have.

The Vines & Vittles Sponsorship Committee will be distributing a list of potential sponsors to club membership.  If anyone has a contact at any of the companies, please let President Doug know the name and the sponsorship committee will meet with your company contact.
Alan Turner gave his interesting and entertaining “Who Am I”.  His sponsors are Gary Saks and Jim Hyldahl.  Congratulations on getting your gold badge in record time, Alan!
Greg Bohart, sponsored by Gary Saks and Jim Sommer, received his red badge.
Dan Barrios, on behalf of The Rotary Foundation, introduced Past DG Scott Carr who had the pleasure of recognizing Diane Remick, John O’Neill, David King and Doug Dawson for their generous participation in the Paul Harris Society.  Scott also recognized Past President Mike Fuqua for his successful leadership of our Club.  Scott mentioned that our Club is one of the strongest and supportive clubs and 100% of our members donated to the Rotary Foundation last year.
Karen Stelman announced that Arilla St. Laurent is now home from the hospital and welcomes phone calls and cards, but no visits at this time.  October birthdays (Don Glover, Scott Lawn and Jon Harris) were celebrated with a delicious chocolate cake donated by Shirley Napierala.
Finemaster John O’Neill amazed us all by jumping right back into “fining mode” after being absent for so long.  Jim Hyldahl didn’t stand a chance as his phone went off and he was sitting next to John.  Oops!  Bill Brehm was another easy target since he was wearing shorts.  Bill’s excuse was that he couldn’t find his pants since he just moved.  Paul Donick gratefully gave happy bucks for passing his driver’s exam on the second try – whew!
Don Glover introduced our special guest and speaker, District Governor Mel Gallegos, who gave an upbeat and interesting presentation starting with how he became a Rotarian.  He spoke about the huge impact Rotary has made throughout the world in so many ways, most notably that polio has been reduced by 99.9%!   On the local level, he reported that the next District Council meeting will be held in Imperial Valley and the Foundation Gala will be held on April 29.   He ended his presentation with a funny video about the “top secret” District Conference which will be held on March 1-3, 2019 at the Catamaran Hotel in Mission Beach.  Rotarians are getting a special rate of $179/night with free parking.
Next club meeting is on November 1st.   PLEASE NOTE THAT WE ARE ENCOURAGED TO WEAR HALLOWEEN COSTUMES, MASKS, ETC.

Bernard Mauricia from The Seany Foundation will speak on how to bring happiness and joy to struggling children.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane, Scribe
