Today is World Polio day and, as requested by our co-presidents, many members wore their very red END POLIO NOW tee shirts! Susan and David King brought the meeting to order and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by new member Lisa de la Torre, a first-generation immigrant. While taking her daughter to school, Lisa told her she would be leading the Pledge at Rotary. She explained to her daughter how important the Pledge was to her and that she was honored to be leading it. PDG Mike Stelman inspired us with quotes from famous people.

Our greeter was Terry Heck who introduced our guests including Mary Stanton of the RB Sunrise club, Barb Crew and Didi Saks. Joel Doss lead us with baton in hand in a nearly pitch- perfect rendition of our beloved Welcome Song.

We celebrated World Polio Day and October birthdays with cake. Joel continued to show off his conducting skills by leading us again in singing, you guessed it, “Happy Birthday”. President Susan thanked our volunteers: room setup by Jim Reid; check-in by Joel Doss and Alex Robertson; meeting pictures by James Kaspar; Bill Angus for doing the newsletter; meeting organization by John O’Neill and these words by your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

The first announcement was made by past president Shirley Napierala who told us that the Poway Unified School District has identified 450 candidates for the Adopt-a-Family program. She thanked those who have donated already to bring holiday cheer to the several families we will support and requested additional donations.

Immediate past president Mike Fuqua said the 2020 Vine & Vittles committee had had its first meeting. He said he’d like everyone to be on a committee and that everyone is on the Sponsorship committee.

President-elect Alex Robertson told us about his experience at the D5340 LEAD Conference. The Leadership, Ethics, Aspirations and Determination Conference was held last weekend at the Cuyamaca Outdoor School for 140 eighth graders. LEAD encourages young people to discuss issues of ethical responsibility, improve leadership and communication skills, become self- motivated to reach goals, and develop a positive outlook on life ... all while having fun and making friends. It seeks to help youth think about: it’s not about where you’ve been, it’s about where you are going.

Regarding the Family of Rotary, past president Arilla St. Laurent told us that Frances Blair is in the hospital and going through testing related to some past issues that are still showing up. Please send cards of encouragement (not get-well cards) to her here:

Susan announced that all $$ collected today would go to Polio +. Arilla took the mic back and fined all members who were not wearing their END POLIO NOW tee shirts. She oversaw the donation of a bunch of Happy Bucks as well. Cathy Glover corrected last week’s minutes saying that she did pay her fine for being in the paper.

We watched a video about Rotary’s progress in eradicating polio. Past president Don Glover then spoke about the program and recognized Mike and Karen Stelman and your scribe as having participated in past polio immunization days in Ghana and India respectively. He also acknowledged Barb and Charley Crew, Gary and Didi Saks and Patty and Mike Fuqua who will be going to India in January 2020 to “do the drops”.

Pat Chaffe introduced our speakers Dee Bauer and Karen Cebreros who spoke about microcredit and the impact on coffee growers in Honduras.

Co-president Dave reminded those of us who volunteered to help at Rancho Beernardo on 10/26 to make sure they know what time their shift begins. Please wear a costume for next week’s meeting. The Oaks North cleanup is 11/9.
