RANCHO BERNARDO ROTARY CLUB ZOOM MEETING

OCTOBER 15, 2020

Meeting called to order by President Alex Robertson at 11:03 am. After reciting the Rotary 4 Way Test Resa Coopat led members in the Pledge of Allegiance. Resa shared statistics about the original signers of the Declaration of Independence probably unknown to members including that of the 56 signers, 6 were over 70, 10 over 80 and 3 over 90. Two signers bachelors and 16 married twice. Two had 6 children. 325 children for the rest with some with 15, 17 and 18 children each.

Greg Bohart shared inspirational comments by Martin Luther King and Yogi Berra. Yogi reminded us, “Always go to other people’s funerals otherwise they won’t come to yours.”
Virtual Greeter, Aubrey Paris enthusiastically welcome each member in attendance followed by our welcome song sung by Joel Doss dedicating song to Rotary members in attendance not seen for awhile. Alex thanked volunteers for today’s meeting including Mike Fuqua for setting up Zoom, Diane Remick as Scribe and Bill Angus, Newsletter.

Arilla sadly gave us news that as we assembled, Gary Saks was undergoing surgery at Kaiser for prostate cancer. The good news is the report is they got the cancer early and he should make a full recovery. Let’s all send him a get well card. Also it was reported Terry Heck’s brother died in an accident last Thursday. Terry is in our thoughts! A card to Terry always appreciated.

Our illustrious fine master, John O’Neill was welcomed as usual with a chorus of boos which he has deservedly earned. He started off by fining Toby Westbrook $10 for his “beautiful” hair style. Barber shops are open, Toby. Happy Bucks were plentiful remembering birthdays and anniversaries as well as appreciation of Jim Hyldahl’s bacon smoking abilities. Vern contributed in honor of the response to underwear and socks collection for Veteran’s Stand Down in November and Don Glover donated $200 to thank Jim for his bacon and End Polio Plus. Looking forward to delicious bacon and eggs soon thanks to Jim. Joe Gandelman introduced his 2-1/2 grandson. Michael Ortiz contributed in honor or his End Polio Plus skydive with his wife October 31. Jim Hyldahl donated $25 to honor member, Larry Saunders “visiting” from Mesquite, Nevada.

John Goodrich introduced speaker Susan Callery and Daniel Bailey from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Susan in charge of several programs at JPL and NASA holding several positions. Daniel is the “go to guy” answering questions from the public. An avid hiker and baseball fan. Both studying earth for decades. Much misinformation in the media about climate so hopefully today we will learn the real background of climate change. We need to protect and love our planet. JPL part of NASA as of 1957. JPL part of California Institute of Technology. Known for robotic exploration and built cameras for spacecraft. One third of responsibilities is to keep watch on our planet. “Strange Angels” book talks about early years of exploration. Initially rocket tech experienced a lot of mistakes. Program a response to the cold war. Built Explorer 1 rocket system in three months in 1958. Primitive. JPL recorded radiation and partnered with Earth Science & Application Division describing operation status of satellites.

Look to the past to determine current climate conditions. Earth warming rapidly. Orbital cycles work together accounting for recent earth warming. Last ice age 22 million years ago. Oceans warming. Greenhouse gases created by 7.8 million people responsible for climate conditions. Overall gases a good thing. Without gases planet would be frozen. Society adding too much to situation. Human and natural factors affect climate. In 2002 Co2 level was 375 to 414 parts per million directly related to the burning of fossil fuels representing a big increase. Seeing more droughts and fires driven by climate change. Temperature in California increased 5.5 degrees since 1970. Fire season in California increased by 75 days per year. More flooding. More intense hurricanes. Global changes affect availability of fresh water. Sea level rise accelerating. Arctic warming three times faster than any other place on planet. Much less old ice. Permafrost thawing releasing stored carbon into atmosphere.

Jim Hyldahl thanked our speakers and said a book to be donated to Rancho Bernardo Middle School in their names. Hopefully, will be a book about climate control so students can become more informed about the need to save our planet.

Mike Fuqua gave a report of foundation disbursements for this year. Club gifted funds to 10 entities amounting to $10,300. With matching amount of $8250 total dispersed, $18,600. Grants given in the amount of $28,550. Funding Summary showing more detail available from Mike.

President Alex reminded members the meeting next week, October 22 will be a club assembly meeting and encouraged everyone to attend.

Meeting adjourned at 12:17 pm.
