President Doug called the meeting to order and we all recited the Four Way Test. Our Pledge was led by our newest member, Johanna and Diane Remick gave a very nice Inspirational Message. Troy Daum was our greeter and introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. He even led us in the Welcome Song! Doug thanked the volunteers who worked that evening; Scribe: Karen Stelman, Front Desk: Joel, Dan Malloy and Alex Robertson, Set Up: Jim Reid and Photographer: James Kaspar.

John Goodrich asked for volunteers to help the RB Sunrise Rotary Club with their very successful BEERNARDO FESTIVAL being held on Oct. 20th from 2 to 5 p.m. at Webb Lake. We are hoping to join forces with them on many other events to benefit each club by working together. Call John if you'd like to help!

Jim Reid gave a short presentation on a trip he recently made to a Japanese Rotary Club in Tokyo. They had a speaker showing his collection of chop stix and holders. It was quite extensive and the chop stix were wrapped in printed paper from the restaurants who provided them. Then Doug presented him with a Service Above Self award for completing the clubs first quarter of the Rotary year as Program Chair. He did a banner job!!

Vern Cook brought Joe Max's widow, Alberta (Peaches), so she could thank us all for our cards, prayers and attending a Celebration of Life at their home. She's missing him a lot and also working on getting better after her health struggles. Let's keep her in our prayers and drop her a card from time to time. Vern is also taking sign ups for the Kingston Trio coming to the Poway Performing Arts on Sunday, Nov. 18th. Call him if you're interested.

Pres. Doug gave Happy Bucks for he and Jess surviving a potentially serious accident the other evening. The front bumper and part of their car was sheered of after a 60 mph car flew in front of them at an intersection. No injuries thank goodness!

Our 2nd Quarter Chair is Mira and she introduced our speaker, Duane Trombly who spoke to us on Substance Abuse Disorders. It has been reported that one in seven Americans will develop a substance use disorder at some point in their lifetime. They can be addicted in as little as 10 days. This is called an accidental addition. Fortunately, doctors are now limited in what they can prescribe and a data base will provide information on prescriptions/clients so their drug use can be tracked and limited. One simple step by us can help if we just go to our bathroom cabinets and remove any and all harmful drugs, most of which may be out dated. Remove the temptation and you help remove the problem. It is said many teenagers and addicts will ransack a home during an Open House for sale or even the homes of parents and relatives. Oct. 27th has been designated Take Back the Drugs Day. You can pick up a bag at your local CVS Pharmacy and bring it back with prescription drugs you want out of the house and they will dispose of them.

Sat., Oct 13th was our clean up day at Seven Oaks. The sky was ominous but it stayed dry almost til the end. We had lots of volunteers and filled 3 large (train car size) bins that were hauled away by EDCO who volunteered to provide them!
Nov. 16 is the Foundation Gala. More information to follow
INFORMATION NOT GIVEN OUT AT THIS MEETING
Francie Barrios (Dan's wife) had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago and has had a very hard time with pain management and swelling of her leg. She was sent home from the hospital (2nd visit) where they controlled the swelling which eased her pain. Please drop her a card if you can.
I called Bob Barr just to say hi and see how he was doing and we had a nice chat. He sounds good but experiences paralysis in his legs off and on and can't get around easily. He's using a walker and has a great attitude. Another chance for a card!!
