November 5th: Every quarter a group of us goes to Ronald MacDonald House to cook dinner for families of sick children. It is a rewarding and humbling experience. As an extra added bonus tonight our own Joe Gandelman and his "friends" were in the house entertaining some of the kids. They loved him!

Rotary Club of RB – Meeting Notes 10/10/19
By Sandie Dewane, Scribe
Co-Presidents Susan and David King called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. at the Country Club of Rancho Bernardo.  We began by reciting the 4-Way Test.  After viewing a touching video tribute to veterans, Don Glover led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Inspirational message.   Co- President David added that veterans are honored the entire month of November.
Greeter Arilla St. Laurent welcomed numerous guests this evening and “baton waving” Joel Doss led us in singing the Welcome Song.   Co-President Susan thanked the following volunteers:  Front Desk – Joel Doss, Alan Turner, Cathy Glover; Set Up – Bill & Sandy Brehm; Photographer – Bill Brehm; Meeting Organizer – John O’Neill and Scribe – Sandie Dewane.
Toby Westbrook reminded everyone that the Poway Symphony Orchestra will be commemorating Beethoven’s 250th birthday with a performance of his “Symphony No. 9” on 11/24/19 at the Poway Center for the Arts.  There will be an expanded orchestra, a large chorus and 4 soloists. He also mentioned that he and Ann will be hosting a dictionary labelling party at their home on 1/11/20.  Co-President Susan said that the deadline for ordering poinsettias is 11/15/19.  Cathy Glover is taking orders for Sees Candy until 12/5/19.  Shirley Napierala is still taking donations for Adopt-A-Family.   Guest and RB Honorary Deputy Mayor Kate Hirsh informed us about the upcoming performances of “The Nutcracker” on December 14 and 15 by the Southern California Ballet at the Poway Center for the Arts.
Barb Crew thanked our Club and specific members for donations and matching funds to Vista Hill, a special charity of hers.  She also thanked the Club members who deliver food on a regular basis and those who support the Fashion Show benefiting Vista Hill.  Foundation President Don Glover had the pleasure of presenting a check in the amount of $3,000 to Interfaith Community Services.
Arilla gave the Family of Rotary report.  She mentioned that Frances Blair, now living in Texas, will be receiving chemotherapy in lieu of surgery.  Cathy Glover is now “boot free” and John Kasser is on the mend.  After a few weeks’ absence, we heartily welcomed Finemaster John O’Neill back with a loud chorus of boos, which made John feel right at home.  Before asking for happy bucks, he asked Larry Valente what in the world did he do to get that deep into the dog house?   Seems John felt Larry’s elaborate and glowing introduction of Virginia was a bit over the top!   Happy Bucks were given by a number of folks including Jim Hyldahl in praise of the 35 volunteers that worked at the Oaks North Community clean up on 11/9; Bob Vaughn for the assistance given to him when he took a tumble at Oaks North; Alex Lawn in honor of his 27th birthday; Arilla on behalf of Judy Luttiken and Vern Cook thanking Jim Hlydahl.
Co-President Dave had the honor of inducting Stefan Tica as a member of our Club.  Stefan’s sponsor is Sandie Dewane, who presented his membership packet to him; he received a new Rotary pin from his mentor Bob Vaughn and his temporary red badge from Membership Chair Alan Turner.  Stefan’s classification is Healthcare.  Welcome to Rotary, Stefan!
Bob Chambers introduced guest speaker, Gina Jacobs, who gave a presentation on the proposed SDSU Mission Valley West complex.  Her talk generated many questions and comments.
Upcoming events:  District golf on 12/4 and the Club’s holiday dinner on 12/12 at BHCC.  Next week’s program is Elkie Wills of the San Diego Humane Society.
The meeting was adjourned.
