RB Rotary Club, November 11, 2021 Meeting Notes
By Sandie Dewane, Scribe

Today’s meeting fell on Veterans Day and Co-President Alex Robertson, proudly wearing his Grandfather’s war medals, called the meeting to order. We recited the 4 Way Test motto with him. Don Glover thanked all the veterans in the room for their service and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a surprise rendition of “Grand Ole Flag” by Jim Sommer. Following suit, Toby Westbrook gave a touching Inspirational Message of Hope and Remembrance in honor of his brother, Larry. Greeter Shirley Napierala welcomed 1 visiting Rotarian and 6 Guests and Joel Doss welcomed them in song.

Co-President Alex told us that Veteran Max Gurney, age 100, was honored by his Rotary Club yesterday. Max, not one to slow down, is planning a wine tasting trip to Burgundy, France!

Co-President Athenea Luciano had the pleasure of inducting new member Lee Proimos to our Club. Lee is a retired Entertainment Insurance Consultant. He is a member of Your Safe Place Foundation in San Diego, as well as Grandma’s House of Hope in Orange County. Lee lives in Poway and enjoys hiking, golfing and bicycling. His Sponsor and Mentor is Dan Malloy. Welcome Lee!

Co-President Athenea thanked the members for all they do in support of Rotary on a regular basis. Today’s volunteers: Front Desk-Dave King, Pat Chaffee, Joel Doss; Sgt-at-Arms & Photographer-Bill Brehm; Newsletter-Bill Angus; Audio & Pictures-Alan Turner; Scribe-Sandie Dewane.

Terri Hunter announced that she is collecting new pajamas for ages 4 years and older until December 10. The PJs can be brought to our Rotary meetings or delivered to the homes of Arilla St. Laurent or Terri. Arilla happily announced that Terri recently had surgery, but obviously doing okay because she’s at today’s meeting!

Next up was someone we haven’t seen for awhile and it was great to be able to give our Boos and Jeers to the one and only John O’Neill! He started off by fining Arilla for winning $100 in the football pool at Instant Replay (IR), a bar frequented by some of our club members. Don Glover was fined because his photo was in the paper. Happy bucks were gladly given by Jim Reid, Mike Stelman, Johanna Mullin – in honor of Mary Doss who is a WWII veteran, Larry Valente, Dan Malloy, Shirley Napierala for Adopt a Family, Joel Doss, Gary Sax, and Joe Leventhal. Scribe’s apologies to anyone left out.

Joe Leventhal was called to the podium where he unexpectedly received his first Paul Harris award. Congratulations Joe! Arilla announced that the “Couch Potatoes” raised $129.73 for the last quarter through purchases from Amazon Smile, Ralph’s and Major Market.

November is Rotary Foundation Month and the program on The Rotary Foundation was presented by Mike Stelman. Mike gave an informational and concise talk on the differences between the Club Foundation and The Rotary (International) Foundation. He noted that the annual fund “Every Rotarian, Every Year” is the main funding source for The Rotary Foundation’s programs, which has 7 areas of focus. Bob Vaughn presented the book for Mike’s signature, which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School library.

Our next meeting is on November 18th and the program will be presented by Poway Symphony Orchestra Conductor John LoPiccolo and Piano Soloist, Fred Moyer.

The meeting was adjourned by Co-President Athenea.
Respectfully submitted,
