
Meeting Minutes
November 10, 2022
Past President Athenea Luciano ran today’s meeting for our traveling President Alan Turner.
After leading us in reciting the 4 Way Test, she invited Mike Stelman to the podium, and he led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. In observance of Veteran’s Day, both Mike and Athenea inspired us by bringing all the veterans in the room to the podium where they were honored for their service. Athenea also donated $800 to the club foundation for each one, including her better half, Felix.
Greeter Terri Hunter came up and introduced all our guests.
And then Joel led us in a rousing rendition of our welcome song.
Our first announcement was from your humble scribe who invited the membership to attend the RB Community Foundation Luncheon on November 18th. The RBCF will hand out grants to 22 local groups before a crowd of about 250. Our club is an event sponsor and there will be 28 sitting at our tables including Miss RB and Gigi Brintwood. Gigi has taken over this program from new Washington State resident Lynn Ross.
Jim Reid reminded us that the Poway Symphony will be performing the first concert of this season on Sunday, November 20th at the Poway Center for Performing Arts. Purchase tickets at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts box office by calling 858-748-0505 or online at www.powaycenter.com . Box office open Fri 12-5, Sat 10-3 and one hour before the concert. He was joined by Jim Hyldahl who has again organized a cleanup day for the Seven Oaks community. It will be on Saturday, November 19th from Saturday, November 19 from 8:00 am- 12 noon followed by a pizza and salad lunch, basking in the warmth of another RB Rotary Club effort well done!
Immediate Past President Athena Luciano announced that there will be a house building event in Tecate in December 3rd. We will caravan down. She also said there will be a club social event at Koi Zen Winery on the evening of December 15th. It will be the club meeting that day. Mike Stelman returned to the podium to pitch our poinsettia fund raiser to benefit the marines at MCRD.
Fine Master John O’Neill collected many Happy Bucks, all of which went to Polio Plus.
John Goodrich told us that the San Diego Fine Woodworkers Association Annual Holiday Gift Sale will be on Friday, 11/18 (9am-5pm) and Saturday 11/19 (9am-1pm). The location is 5360 Eastgate Mall in 92121. Your humble scribe attended this event last year and was extremely impressed with the quality of the pieces and how well they were priced. In the Family of Rotary, the update on Don Glover is that he has almost completed 10 radiation treatments for his prostate cancer. While he is having discomfort, his mood continues to be excellent.
Sonny Googins introduced our speaker Steve Schoenberger of the La Jolla Institute for Immunology. Steve spoke about how his research can help our body’s immune system find and kill cancer cells.
As a speaker gift, Cheryl Roop presented Steve with a book entitled “Bubonic Plague” which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library.
