Rotary meeting minutes for 11/1/18
President Doug Dawson opened the meeting by leading us in reciting the traditional Rotary 4-Way Test. He then recognized volunteers Johanna Mullin as Greeter, Joel Doss, Gary Saks and David King for manning the check-in desk, plus Maureen Rouleau for giving the Inspirational Message. Also thanked were club photographer James Kaspar, John O’Neill as Scribe, Susan King for leading the Pledge and setup crew Paul Donick and Jim Reid.
President Doug shared the good news that $1200 was raised to support The Rotary Fund in the fight against polio. We learned that last year there were only 22 reported cases worldwide, in Pakistan and Afganistan. He reminded everyone that the club would be dark on November 22nd, Thanksgiving Day. Our Holiday Party is scheduled for Thursday evening December 13th at BHCC.
John Goodrich named and congratulated all of our club members who helped out the RB Morning Rotary club with their annual fundraiser, The Beernardo Festival. Our hope is that this will result in more joint projects between our clubs. Cathy Glover passed out the holiday See’s Candy order forms and asked that we buy lots of sweets in this delightful fundraiser. She also announced that the dictionary party is coming soon. More information to come.
Former President Mike “El Jefe” Fuqua invited us to join him on November 30th at Donovan Correctional Facility for a graduation of Tender Loving Canines. The event is scheduled at 2:00pm and will feature dogs who been training for their new jobs of assisting people who need their help. Let Mike know if are interested in attending.
Don reported on our Foundation board giving for the year, which exceeds $35,000. Also, our annual Adopt-A-Family program is collecting donations to help families enjoy a more joyous Christmas season. Checks may made out to RB Rotary Foundation with Adopt- A-Family on the description line. All donations are tax deductible.
Finemaster John O’Neill lightly fined a few and collected many Happy Bucks from our generous members.
Don Glover introduced our speaker, Bernard Mauricia, from Seany’s Camp Reach for the Sky. Camp Reach for the Sky (CR4TS) is a free summer camp for kids with cancer and their siblings. The Seany Foundation has taken the reigns for CR4TS from the American Cancer Society, and will continue to run this magical place where kids dealing with the stress of cancer can go to hang out and connect with other kids who truly understand what they are going through.
Seany’s Camp Reach for the Sky is based in Southern California and is made up of camping sessions to meet the needs of those dealing with cancer. This includes Resident Oncology Camp for kids with cancer (residents), Sibling Camp for the brothers and sisters of kids with cancer, and Day Camp for residents and siblings.
Upcoming programs are:

Nov. 8th: Dr. Debra Dupree – Creating an emotionally intelligent workplace.
Nov. 15th: Steve Guroff – San Diego police dept. All about their crime lab.

President adjourned the meeting with a great joke:

A proctologist, after being in practice for 20 years, decided to fulfill his REAL dream and become an auto mechanic. At mechanic school, his first test scored 200%. Confused, he asked the teacher why so high. “Well”, said the teacher, “you got 50% for taking the engine apart perfectly, and another 50% for putting it back together perfectly. The other 100% was doing it all through the tailpipe.”
