May 6th Meeting Notes

President Alex opened the meeting by having all the members recite the 4-Way Test. He then called on Don Glover to lead the pledge. Joel Doss performed an upbeat rendition of our welcome song. He thanked volunteers John O’Neill as Scribe, Mike Fuqua as zoom coordinator and Bill Angus for his newsletter-editing prowess. The virtual greeter was assigned to Mike Stelman, but sadly, he was a no-show. A proper fine will be forthcoming.

John O’Neill as Finemaster fined Dave Brooks $20 for his photo on the front page of the local paper. Dick Norfolk gave $25 to thank Gary Saks and Terry Heck for their good work on the scholarship committee. Dave Brooks stepped up with an additional $195. Mike Fuqua thanked everyone who has donated to the India fund. He said that he had started a GoFundMe drive that was sent out to every club in the district and has raised $10,000 so far. Don Glover gave $25 in recognition of Smokin’ Jim’s salmon and bagels. Vern cook pledged $25 in support of two Del Norte High School teachers as Teachers of the Year. Jim Hyldahl donated $25 to thank Joel Doss for reporting that the Rotary clock was not running, and then helped put together the original team who handled the installation of the clock. The clock is now running and will be receiving further cosmetic refurbishment. John Goodrich pledged $25 for Smokin’ Jim’s delicious salmon which he graciously shared with his spouse Deborah (it’s about time!). He pledged another $25 as a shout out to Dave Brooks who has made sure the Rotary clock was kept in working order for years, including painting it when necessary. Doug Dawson donated for Smokin’ Jim’s salmon and another $25 for the excellent zoom support. President Alex gave $25 to the foundation to salute Smokin’ Jim’s salmon. Sonny Googins pledged $25 in support of the India effort.

Jan Goldsmith introduced our Speaker, San Diego City Attorney Mara Elliott, the lady who took over the job from Jan. She spoke about how her office works hard to protect and help the citizens of San Diego. She described how the different districts have special needs. And how her office helps them.

The 5/13 evening meeting will feature the scholarships being given to deserving students. Gary Saks will host the program.
