May 30, 2019 Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane

President Doug Dawson called the meeting to order. Benita Page led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Joel Doss led us in singing a rousing version of “You’re a Grand Old Flag”. Troy Daum gave today’s Inspirational Message honoring our RYLA guests and the great opportunity they have in shaping our world. New Member Joe Leventhal served as Greeter today and introduced 20+ guests who we serenaded with our Welcome Song, led by who else – Joel Doss!

President Doug thanked the following volunteers: Front Desk- Joel Doss, Vern Cook, John Goodrich; Set Up Crew–Dave Brooks, Paul Donick, Pat Chaffee; Photographer–James Kaspar;
Meeting Organizer–John O’Neill and Scribe–Sandie Dewane. He also thanked everyone who attended the RB Historical Society/Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast on Memorial Day.

Toby Westbrook announced that so far 50 people are coming to the TGIX that he and Ann are hosting at their home on 6/15/19. Last date to RSVP is 6/3/19 as they need to give a head count to the caterer. He also spoke about the AVID program which focuses on best practices for teachers to prepare high school students for college and careers by providing interview practice, among other things. Volunteers needed for upcoming AVID at RBHS on June 11 & 12.

John Goodrich reminded us that President Doug’s Demotion Party is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26th. Alan Turner, recently back from an amazing trip to the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu and Ecuador, presented a Rotary flag from the Quito Norte Rotary Club. Our Club partnered with Quito Norte in bringing clean water to the area.

Del Norte High School student Skylar read a letter from Principal Brian Schultz in which he thanked Club members for their generous donations that funded the students’ yearbook project. Past President Mike Fuqua received a “Service Above Self” coin for being involved in just about everything our club has done this past year, including oversight of every Vines & Vittles committee, RB Alive, website contributions, etc.!

Arilla St. Laurent gave the Family of Rotary report: Larry Valente is recovering from a defibrillator insert and former member Frances Blair is having mobility problems. Arilla distributed get-well cards for both. Our ever-popular Fine Master did what he does best – extracting money from us. Notable this week: Troy Daum was heavily fined again because the book he wrote received some good press in the Chicago Tribune and Baltimore Sun newspapers. Bill Brehm was fined for wearing shorts again. Arilla gave Happy Bucks as she and Chuck recently celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary! John Goodrich is now back attending our weekly meetings and gave Happy Bucks for his return. The reason for his absence - he was taking woodworking lessons every Thursday and built a chair that he brought to the meeting. Many of us didn’t actually see the chair because Mike Fuqua was sitting on it :)

Charley Crew, filling in for Jim Reid who was unexpectedly called out of town, devoted the rest of the meeting to RYLA. He thanked our RYLA Committee – Chair Jim Reid, Bob Chambers, Sonny Googins, Phil Warner, David King, Lynn Ross and John Goodrich who had the difficult task of choosing the students for RYLA camp. We had the pleasure of meeting our special guests from the 2019 RYLA class, consisting of 6 students from RB High and 7 students from Del Norte. Each student told us about their proudest accomplishment to date, and we were quite impressed with their goodwill and leadership skills! We also heard from two of their counselors. Two quotes that students came away with from the RYLA camp: “Fill your heart with gratitude” and “Create the future you want to see.”
