Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club
Meeting Notes for May 23, 2024

The meeting was called to order by President Jim Reid and we recited the Four-Way Test and the Pledge of Allegiance.

President Reid thanked today’s Volunteers: Greeter: Dan Malloy; Audio Visual: Dave Brooks; Sergeant-At-Arms: Bob Vaughn & crew; Scribe: Lee Proimos; Front Desk: Pat Chaffee & Joel Doss; Photographer: Bill Brehm; Book Presenter: Cheryl Roop.


Greater Dan Malloy introduced today’s guests and Joel Doss lead us in singing the Welcome Song.

Members having a May birthday were asked to stand and Happy Birthday was sung to them. Birthday cake was served by Jim Sommer and crew.




Mike Fuqua introduced today’s speaker County Supervisor Joel Anderson who represents the 2nd District. Supervisor Anderson explained his priority is his constituents and he wants to make the County work for them. He discussed working to address homelessness, our roads, public safety and the opioid crisis.


Supervisor Anderson presented Certificates of Recognition to Jim Reid, Alan Turner, Pat Chaffee, Barb Alberts, Jan Goldsmith, Bill Brehm, Athenea Luciano, Jim Hyldahl, Bob Vaughn, Sandie Dewane, Christine Testa,
Charley Crew, and Ken Heinz. The Scribe’s apologies to anyone who is not mentioned due to the speed at which the names were called out.


Supervisor Anderson provided handouts for intern positions he is seeking for his office and the 2023 District 2 Legislative Actions & Accomplishments report.

A book to be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School Library was presented to Supervisor Anderson for his signature.
President Reid made the following announcements.
>The Rancho Bernardo Pancake Festival on May 27th.
>Vines & Vittles June 1st (Alan Turner gave a brief update).
> Operation of Flags for Vets at Miramar National Cemetery on May25th.
>Abraxas High School Garden Open House & Salsa Sale.
> Memorial Day Celebration by the Veterans Association.
> District Governor’s Award Dinner on Monday, June 24th, at the Del Mar Hilton.
>June “Who Am I’s” will be Charley Crew on June 6th and Gary Saks on June 20th.

Gently Hugged received a grant to support its mission to collect and distribute clothing and blankets to babies in need.


The local NAACP representative spoke about the upcoming Juneteenth Celebration which our Rotary Club supports.

Family of Rotary: Sandie Dewane reported that Gary Saks was quickly recovering from hip replacement surgery and Pete Griffith was recovering from two falls.


On behalf of the Paul Harris Society Bob Vaughn presented Lee Proimos with his third donation pin.
Next meeting is Thursday, May 30th. Lee “Hacksaw” Hamilton will be the guest speaker.
President Jim adjourned the meeting by ringing the bell.
