Speaker – Joe Stuyvesent, President and CEO, Port of San Diego since February 2021.
Prior to joining the Port, Joe was the Executive Director of Navy Region Southwest in SD.
Joe expressed his appreciation to Rotary as his parents were affected by Polio when he was a child.
Of 50 miles of San Diego shoreline the Port manages 34 miles in Trust for the State and the remaining belongs to the Navy. Each area has a commissioner, Imperial Beach, Chula Vista, Coronado, National City, and San Diego has 3 commissioners. There are 22parks along with several restaurants, and other attractions.
There are 2 Maritime terminals – 10th avenue where produce such as bananas come in and National City which auto mobiles come through. There is also a seized Russian Yacht that is currently parked here.
San Diego is the #1 destination for cruise ships. There are 140 ships planned to depart from San Diego in the 2022-2023 season. Each has approximately 2 million economic impact.
Some of the challenges for the Port are environmental such as air quality and noise. They are taking steps to mitigate risk by transitioning to electric as much as possible. They also provide air filters and monitor emissions in the area. The clean air strategy includes electrifying anything possible, trucks, ships, cranes, and even tugs. They are currently working on getting a grant for a haul road to take large trucks off Harbor Drive.
The Navy has 72 ships that they plug in for credit – the Port is working with them on an exchange program that has already earned the Port 5 million dollars.
Some projects they are working on are Seaport Village, which will take about 10 years to complete, Top Golf at East Harbor Island, and reinforcement of the existing sea wall that is eroding along Harbor Drive.
The Gaylord project that was started years ago was stopped due to developer challenges and rising interest rates.
The Port is not associated with the Tijuana River treatment plant, the Port did sue them and won $30 million dollars. The Port continues to look for solutions to this issue.

Next Meeting is 4/6
Speaker is Diane Doherty from Your Safe Place
