RANCHO BERNARDO ROTARY CLUB

March 12, 2020

The meeting was called to order by Vice President Don Glover, who led the recitation of the Four Way Test. Michael Ortiz, honoring March Women’s Month, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Resa Coopat gave the Inspirational Thought with words quoted from George Washington's  Founding Fathers’ “Wisdom for the Ages”. Past President Doug Dawson was the Greeter this evening, introducing our guests to the group. Joel Doss led the Welcome Song.

It was a smaller than usual group this evening, as quite a few Members are avoiding group settings in response to the Corona Virus scare. VP Don said the Club Board will meet next week to discuss the Clubs response for group gatherings for future meetings. BHCC came through with safety measures for our dinner this evening, including serving members at the buffet line.

VP Don thanked the volunteers for the evening: Bill Brehm wore two hats tonight, one for set up and one for being the photographer for the evening. Joel Doss and Dan Malloy were at the front desk, Rz Norris was scribe. He also thanked Bill Angus for his on line minutes each week.

We were reminded of the Hats’ Off to Volunteers program on April 18th. Our own Jim Hyldahl will be honored then.  It is unclear whether or not the program will take place due to the Government Corona Virus directives. Jim Reid announced that the RYLA camp in April has been cancelled (COVID-19 again), as has the Poway Symphony Orchestra on April 22nd. Cathy Glover reminded us that the See’s Candy drive will be open until  March 26th. There will be no more See’s Candy sales until late November, but gift cards will be good through summer and fall.  Call or email Cathy to order. She also asked for volunteers to help with the Chaparral school dictionary handout next week. Members stepped right up to help. Doug Dawson said our Club 4 Way Test winner, Skyler Wu won in one of the district semi-finals at the La Jolla this past week.  Our Club had ten members supporting our club Music Competition winner, Laurie Chang, at the District music competition. She did not win, but was awarded $500.

Benita Page introduced Debbie Kurth to receive the Paul Harris Foundation pin. Though it is not usual to award a Paul Harris pin to a non-Rotarian, Debbie was acknowledged for her many services and activities in the Rancho Bernardo area.  She has also been honored with “Mayor” of Rancho Bernardo and the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame.

Vice President Don said the Club had received a thank you letter from Bob Lutticken from Abraxis School for the Foundation check received for the purchase of trees for the school grounds.

Arilla St. Laurent, Family of Rotary, said that Dave Brooks is recovering from his recent surgery. John Kasser is home now and recovering.  John O’Neill is scheduled to have surgery March 25th. Changing hats, Arilla dished out fines and accepted Happy Bucks from members.

Mira Bozanich introduced the speaker for the evening, Bill Portzman, who gave a “workshop” presentation on the “Power of Music”. With interactive means, his message was that through music we can raise awareness of ourselves.  No speakers book was available this evening, so Mr. Portzman donated one of his own books to the Bernardo Heights Middle School.

Vice President Don's closing thought, from Robert Byrne: “The purpose of life-is a life of purpose”.

Respectfully submitted,

Rz Norris
