RB Rotary Club
Minutes of June 6, 2024

President Jim Reed called the meeting to order at 5:59, sans his dromedary hide draped over his shoulders. As customary President Jim led the attendees in both the Rotary Four-Way Test and Pledge of Allegiance.

Weekly meeting volunteers are an essential element to the success for our meetings and President Jim announced to attendees each of the volunteers this week. They included:
Charley Crew as our greeter
John Goodrich was today’s esteem Scribe
As always (unless he is traveling) Dave Brooks oversees all AV tasks
Pat Chaffee and Joel Doss were stationed at the front desk snagging the money
Joel Doss and his crew of secret elves managed Sgt at Arms duties
The book presentation was expertly and enthusiastically handled by Cheryl Roop

Charley Crew, as the greeter, also announces our visitors to the Club today. With great humility he initiated introductions with his wife Barb. As we get old sometimes the most important items slip by, Charlie wanted to insure that did not happen to him……..like it has in the past.

Charley recognized one visiting Rotarian and those members with guests included Alex Robertson, Jim Hyldahl, Bill Brehm and soon to be member Tim Baird. Joel Doss pulled out his baton and with great zeal conducted the Club in our Welcome song.

Leading off with the announcements was Alan Turner sharing a recap of last weekend’s Vines & Vittles fund raising. His interpretation was this was the best one yet, with lots of energy and buzz among attendees and vendors. He estimated 1,000 people were in attendance and, unlike previous years, they stayed up to the very end, although not long enough to help with tear-down. Alan reported the craft vendors were particularly excited with their sales and expressed interest in returning. We were fortunate this year to receive $36,000 in grants from the tireless work of Barb Alberts, along with additional monies from sponsors. At the end of the day Alan’s preliminary results show we earned $40,000 in proceeds. He ended by expressing great appreciation for all those volunteers, without volunteers this event would not be successful. We all should be proud. As a reminder, all the funds go out to the community when we do our own granting.
Other announcements included
Guide Dogs of America: Saturday June 8, 9AM-1PM, Waterfront Park
Juneteenth: June 15, Downtown Oceanside
Governor’s Award Dinner: sold out
Club Assembly: June 20 Club meeting.

Alex Robertson gave us an update on the Imperial Valley Education Project. This is a terrific project getting education to many of the migrant kids who because they travel are unable to attend regular schooling.

We had a special guest today, Bill Stumbaugh, a Rotarian living in Ecuador, who works with our RI Global Grants. He shared with us some of the success stories that resulted in getting water to the area.

Who Am I is a program we offer allowing members to speak about themselves. This allows new members to hear a little about their fellow members. This week Charley Crew spoke of his background. In summary, Charley was born in South Dakota, and his Dad was a Rotarian. Charley was quite the stud growing up, track star, Hall of Famer, class president, married High School sweetheart, and leaped tall buildings in a single bound. He went to Colorado School of Mines obtaining an engineering degree and then went to work with Caterpillar, first in the engineering division and then decided sales was more to his liking. Charley spent his career hanging with lift trucks which took him and the family all over the world. He reminded us “Everything has a forklift in it life”. Charley joined Rotary in 2002 and became President 2007. Some of his Rotary highlights include attending 5 RI Conventions and he wanted to impress members to pick your passion and if you are not asked, volunteer for a task in Rotary.

Sandie Dewane is our Family in Rotary person, who keeps up informed with the health status of our members. We are so grateful for her work and attention to this. Today she announced Pete Griffith had a fall while on vacation and is still not able to return home.
Bob Vaughn is in charge of liberating members of their extra money…..all for the good of Rotary. In his usual spirited self, he succeeded in unburdening us with our money. Thank you, Bob.

Colleen Huschke from the SD County DA office was our program. She talked about consumer protection and scam prevention. Outstanding talk, but scary. Even the most sophisticated people can get scammed.

Next Meeting: Marni von Wilpert, City Councilmember will give us an update on the district.
