Meeting Minutes
June 6, 2019

Past President Gary Saks ran the meeting today while President Doug was out of town. He brought the meeting to order and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Charlie Crew who reminded us of the sacrifices made by those who stormed the beach in Normandy on D-Day 75 years ago today. His father was one of them. Bob Chambers inspired us with his thoughts about gratitude and a journal he is keeping to record his thoughts about it.
Our greeter was Diane Remick who introduced our guests including Gary’s wife Didi. Joel Doss lead us with baton in hand in an inspiring rendition of Gary’s favorite: our fabulous Welcome Song.

Gary thanked our volunteers: room setup by Jim Reid and Paul Donick; check-in by Joel Doss and Phil Warner; meeting pictures by James Kaspar; Bill Angus for doing the newsletter; meeting organization by John O’Neill and these words by your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

Toby Westbrook introduced Leann Marshall who oversees the AVID program at RB High School. This program helps low-income students become successful by teaching team building, public speaking skills and the benefits of community service. RB Rotary participates by helping conduct mock interviews with the students to help them get ready for the application process for both college and the workplace.

Foundation chair Dan Barrios recognized Troy Daum as achieving the Paul Harris+5 level.
We celebrated May and June birthdays, of which there were many. A tasty sheet cake was divided and delivered to the tables by the celebrants.

Acting finemaster Arilla St. Laurent showed us a picture from this week’s RB News Journal of last week’s scholarship winners. It included both Doug and Gary, but she did not fine Gary because of his good work in chairing the scholarship committee. Arilla also noted that David Ross, a former employee of hers who doodled on everything, is being recognized as the Featured Artist at the 2019 San Diego Festival of the Arts this weekend at Waterfront Park. She then opened the floor to Happy Bucks and collected a bunch.

We have received several pictures of our members who are attending the RI Convention, here’s one with, L to R, Dave King, Susan King, Alex Robertson, Cathy Glover and Don Glover.

Ron Hunt introduced our speaker John Sheridan, the CEO of Tandem Diabetes Care, Inc. who spoke to us on the micro-infusion insulin pumps they manufacture in San Diego.

Gary ended the meeting with a quote from Lily Tomlin: “I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do something about that, then I realized that I was somebody.”
