Meeting Minutes
June 16, 2022
An ill but Covid-free President Athenea Luciano rang the bell to open our meeting and led us in reciting the Four Way Test.
Don Glover led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. He told us about the Bellamy salute; a palm-out salute created in 1892 to honor Francis Bellamy, who wrote the Pledge. It was replaced in 1942 because it resembled the salute adopted by Italian fascists and German Nazis.
President Athenea then brought John Goodrich to the podium and he inspired us with several bon mots.
After that, Athenea asked President-elect Alan Turner to run the remainder of the meeting so she could rest. Alan asked Shirley Napierala to introduce our guests, and after that he invited us to attend the Governor’s dinner the evening of June 30th at the Del Mar Hilton. He also spoke about his positive experience at the Rotary Convention in Houston.
He specifically mentioned stopping by the Rotary Action Group booth on mental health in the House of Friendship; this will be a key focus for his year.
Alan turned the mic over to John O’Neill who told us that Arilla St. Laurent would require surgery to remove her foot. Pete Griffith was back and at our table; it was great to see him. John then fined Mary Beth and Joel Doss for being in the RB News Journal; if you haven’t seen the article it is here: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/pomerado-news/news/story/2022-06-15/with-singing-dancing-and-fitness-classes-97-year-old-poway-woman-has-stayed-active
Jon Teich, a Major Gifts Officer with the Rotary Foundation, then spoke to us about the work he does and offered to meet to discuss your Rotary philanthropic goals.
Jon can be reached at jon.teich@rotary.org.
(Note – see the new 85” TV behind Jon; it has replaced the projector and screen we have been using for the last several years. It is much brighter and easily visible from the back of the room.)
Katie Hunter gave her “Who-am-I”. She was born in San Francisco and got a degree in film studies. She has been married for 37 years and has two children, Will and Grace. She worked at Channel 8 in marketing and currently runs a travel business. As a volunteer she has worked with an Alzheimer’s group and also spearheaded fundraising to build the Music Building at RB High School. Katie then received her gold badge:
Gary Saks then introduced our speaker, Randy Schimka.
Randy spoke about electric vehicles, how they are charged and what they cost to run.
As a speaker’s gift, Cheryl Roop presented him with a book titled Four to the Pole!
Alan adjourned today’s meeting at 1:30 pm.
