June 13, 2024 Rotary Meeting Minutes
President Jim Reid began the meeting with members citing the Rotary Four Way Test followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.
He thanked today's volunteers including Greeter-Michael Ortiz; Scribe-Christine Testa; A/V-Dave Brooks; Front Desk-Joel Doss & Mark Alberts; Sgt. At Arms-Joel Doss and crew; Photographer-Katie Hunter; and Book Presenter-Cheryl Roop.
Our greeter, Michael Ortiz, helped introduce visiting Rotarians and guests who were then beautifully serenaded with the Welcome song.
Virginia Valente was inducted as an Honorary Member.
Following this, Charley Crew and John Mullen presented a check to Interfaith where Cesar Trejo expressed his gratitude for the many years Rotary has shown support.
Time to party!
This was a very special day in which Rotarians and family members celebrated Marybeth Doss' 99th Birthday. Sitting by her side was of course her son Joel, but also her daughter Barbara, and her niece Gina. Over the weekend she will enjoy time with her son Christopher, his wife and their son Joel, as well as her granddaughter Shannon.
After singing happy birthday and cake passed around, Rosalind and Sandie beamed with joy as they expressed their love for Marybeth encouraging others to "have the faith she has" and revealed many surprises for her. She was given a birthday card gift bag and learned that her daughter wrote an autobiography of her which is available for anyone to read.
Mark your calendar folks, as City Council member, Marni von Wilpert, announced June 13th, 2024 as Marybeth Doss Day in the city of San Diego! President Jim also shared that Marybeth was also honored by member of Congress, Representative Scott Peters, in recognition of her 99th birthday and for her outstanding service and commitment to the community and long list of organizations.
Fellow Navy Veteran Mike Fuqua then took the stage to gift Marybeth with a World War II Navy Veteran hat which she immediately wore stating it was very very special for her and so wonderful, and she was proud to wear it and with what she could do.
President Jim made the following announcements:
-Juneteenth: June 15th, Downtown Oceanside
-June 20th Club Assembly at the meeting and Who Am I-Gary Saks
-Governor's Award Dinner Monday 6/24 in the evening, Del Mar Hilton, sold out.
-RB Town Hall Meeting, Mayor Todd Gloria, 6:30pm on June 25th at the Rancho Bernardo Library.
Dave Fitter jokingly started his Who Am I presentation saying there's no way it will be as exciting as Marybeth's festivities, but it was lovely to hear more about him. He has 4 siblings and held 3 jobs as a teenager while attending high school. He has been married for 31 years and laughed saying he got married on his birthday making it easy for him to remember his anniversary. A wise man he is. In 2020 he retired and moved to San Diego and looks forward to continued community service opportunities and taking cruise vacations. Mark Alberts presented him with his gold badge. Welcome to the family Dave!
Gary Saks shared about our Family of Rotary including that Dan Barrios has a shiny new pace maker, and John O'Neill is looking into the possibility of getting an adapted van that he would drive using just his hands.
Bob Vaughn rushed around the room collecting many donations from our Happy Rotarians.
Another special date added to our calendars as our speaker, City Council Member Marni von Wilpert, declared June 27th, 2024 as James Reid day in the city of San Diego.
Marni then discussed our local road conditions as per special request of Mike Fuqua. She gave information on the various road conditions, ways to fix them, funding, and gave many resources for residents. We saw a photo of a van that uses lasers in all directions to assess road conditions and Marni is determined to advocate for more funding and better planning for our city. It makes sense why it is important to focus on preventing future damage as it is costing 11 million dollars to reconstruct 1 road in Mira Mesa due to it being ignored.
Marni also shared about a bill she recently passed called The Ira Sharp Firearm Dealer Accountability Act (FDAA).
Hit a deep pot hole? See debris in an intersection? Feel like you're driving on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride at Disneyland when avoiding damaged roads? Then download the app "Get It Done" to send photos and report poor road conditions to the city.
Cheryl Roop presented a book for Marni to sign which will be donated to Bernardo Heights Middle School.
President Jim as always encouraged members to be engaged and then adjourned the meeting by ringing the bell.
Respectfully submitted,
Christine Testa, Scribe
