Meeting Minutes

July 6, 2023

By Barb Alberts, Scribe

President Jim Reid called his inaugural meeting to order and led us in reciting the 4-Way test and the Pledge of Allegiance.

Barb Alberts greeted guests and Joel Doss directed us in the Welcome Song. Members were inspired by Resa Coopat’s patriotism and her gratitude for many Rotarian’s participation with Spirit of the Fourth.

Still enjoying “the 4th”, Arilla St. Laurent waived fines and asked for and received Happy Bucks from members who congratulated district awards and club successes, offered best wishes for our new president, or shared happy family news. Arilla reported Steve LaPointe was having surgery 7/7 and will send him our best wishes.

President Jim Reid introduced his theme, Onward and Upward Rotary, and his focus on (1) Engagement  (2) Mental Health  and (3) Music. While praising and thanking service and club operation leadership and their teams, President Jim enumerated our many programs and functions. Encouraging more engagement, he demonstrated to newer and seasoned members that our club’s success relies on all Rotarians fulfilling a role.

Immediate past president Alan Turner accepted President Jim’s assignment for creating a mental health services committee as the club strives to increase the scope of its adolescent mental health initiative.

Contact Charley Crew for Youth Volunteer certification advised President Jim. Being pre-certified offers Rotarians access to rewarding service opportunities now and when a new call to action occurs.

President Jim announced that music is now a monthly happening through the group’s singing and live performances, e.g. Katie Kim, Principal flute with Poway Symphony Orchestra (8/3/23). It also is a means for serving youth, e.g. resurrecting our former music contest, and for building new community collaborations.

Monthly birthday celebrations are back with Jim Sommers arranging cake. Arilla continues sending cards and told members that the club wants to celebrate them (and eat cake) so please give your birth month and day (not year) to her if it’s not already in your ClubRunner profile.

President Jim reminded us of upcoming events:

7/13 - Next week’s speaker Dan Desaegher, CDO - TERI, Inc. a non-profit school helping and  empowering youth with special needs

7/25 - San Diego Padres at Petco Park - Contact Don Glover for answers and tickets

8/25 - Day at the Races - contact Diane Remick for answers and tickets

President Jim completed his first meeting having thanked everyone for their help and encouragement as he learns his new role and he asked for their future support during his term. He also thanked his new Board and presented them with their updated gold badges.
