Rotary Meeting Notes – July 29, 2021
By Sandie Dewane, Scribe

Co-President Alex Robertson called the meeting to order and we joined him in reciting the Four-Way Test. Dick Norfolk led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Jim Reid’s Inspirational Message recalled the life of Gyorgy Ligeti (1923-2006), a Hungarian Jewish composer who overcame the horrors of WWII to return to his passion for composing contemporary classical music. Ligeti’s music can be heard in the 1968 movie, “2001 A Space Odyssey”. Greeter Johanna Mullin welcomed guests Barry Wolfert and Terri Hunter. Joel Doss led us in singing the Welcome Song.

Co-President Athenea Luciano introduced her husband, Felix Luciano, who gave his “Who Am I” speech today. Felix told us that he attended an all-boys Catholic School in New York City; was in the Marines for 11 years; has 4 kids; and worked in Homeland Security, ICE Division for 25 years. His Gold Badge was presented by Bill Brehm. Congratulations, Felix!

Secretary Jeanne Hawkins brought us up to date on social events scheduled through the end of the year: August - Padres game; Sept/Oct – Midway tour; November – Poway Symphony.

Don Glover happily reported that all 40 Padre tickets for the August 8th game have been sold! Mike Fuqua reminded everyone that the seats are in the sun and to wear sunscreen and a hat.

Mike Fuqua announced that Del Norte High School is in process of forming an Interact Club. Mike’s granddaughters attend Del Norte and they are excited about Interact coming to their school. A coordinator from our club is needed; please contact him if you are interested.

Bob Vaughn reported that he recently had the honor of attending the Sword Ceremony for graduating Marines at MCAS Miramar. He pointed out that our Poinsettia Fundraiser pays for the swords and flyers were at each table.

Judy Lutticken and Arilla are seeking pledges for the Abraxas Garden “Seed Money” Matching Gift fund. Please contact them if you wish to donate.

Arilla St. Laurent’s Family of Rotary report was that John O’Neill stayed home today due to a bit of congestion. She then morphed into our Illustrious Fine Mistress where she received happy bucks from Sonny Googins, who counted 12 guys wearing shorts and gave $2 per leg for a total of $24. Unfortunately for Bill Brehm, Arilla overheard him saying his legs were worth much more and she fined him! Dave Brooks gave $50 for the 50 weeks that service dog, Elton, spent with him. Elton is now in the “brig” at Camp Pendleton, but will be furloughed every 2 months to spend 5 days with Dave. Jan Goldsmith added another $50 for Dave’s service dog. Cheryl Roop gave for her first in-person meeting and Bob Vaughn for Miramar invitation from Dave King and Mike Stelman.

Alex announced that our new District Governor will be attending next week’s evening meeting and will be inducting two new members: Terri Hunter and Rosalind Duddy.

Athenea thanked today’s volunteers: Dave Brooks- Operations; Bill Angus- Newsletter; Terry Heck, Pat Chaffee, Joel Doss- Front Desk; James Kaspar- Photographer; Bill Brehm- Sgt. At Arms and Sandie Dewane, Scribe.
Our next meeting is on August 5th in the evening.

The meeting was adjourned by Athenea.
Respectfully submitted,
Sandie Dewane
