Rotary meeting minutes for 1/7/21

President Alex opened the meeting by leading us in reciting the traditional Rotary 4-Way Test. He then recognized volunteers Shirley Napierala as Virtual Greeter, Cathy Glover leading the Pledge and Alan Turner for giving the Inspirational Message. Also thanked were John O’Neill as Scribe, Bill Angus for the newsletter format and Mike Fuqua for the zoom setup.

We were all sad to hear of the passing of our beloved member, Bob Barr. He died as a result of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He will be sorely missed. Rest in peace Bob.

Finemaster John O’Neill fined Joel Doss and Don Glover $10 each for getting their picture in the local paper. Bob Vaughn gave $20 for a suspicious bump removal and was elated to hear that it was not cancerous. Cathy Glover reported that Sees candy orders will on online going forward. Jim Reid gave $50 to celebrate his son Dean for proposing to his girlfriend Katie via zoom. Dan Barrios shared a photo of his newest great grand daughter. Joe Leventhal donated $50 saying he is happy to see us again. Hey, we’re happy to be seen!  Jim Hyldahl gave $100 to thank everyone who bought his delicious smoked fish and bacon.
Mike Fuqua offered up $20 in remembrance of the wonderful time he spent in India a year ago administering the polio vaccine to children. Gary Saks informed us he has been in Rotary 46 years. Congratulations! Brian Flaherty, who gave $50 to celebrate his three grandsons all being in college now. Larry Valente showed his newest family members, kittens Mario and Luigi given by his daughter, and donated $25. Sonny Googins informed us that we had 48 people at our zoom meeting, the best attendance yet. She donated $48. John thanked everyone for their generosity.

Mike Fuqua introduced a very special guest today, District Governor Steve Weitzen. He joined us to induct Rotary’s newest member, Connie Alvarez, head of the 4S Ranch Boys and Girls Club and to thank our club for the honors we have received over the past year. DG Steve went on to speak about how he became a Rotarian and how rewarding it has been for him.  He spoke about foreign visits to other clubs and the scourge of human trafficking for sex and drugs. In San Diego alone these activities bring the criminals $8mm per year. Steve’s presentation was warm and full of information. He left everyone with a feeling that we are in good hands under his positive leadership.

Our speaker at the January 14th evening meeting will be Victoria Cavaliere from Tender Loving Canines. This organization is a particular favorite fro our club members. Don’t miss it! We will also be receiving a Foundation.
