Rancho Bernardo Rotary
January 31, 2019
President Doug, anticipating a long, busy meeting, called the meeting to order five minutes early. The Pledge was led by new member John Mullen, who gave a brief history of the Pledge of Allegiance before asking the members to join him in the Pledge.  The Inspirational Message was given by new member Terry Heck, who read an uplifting poem, the message being that one life can make a difference.
Greeter, Charlie Crew, introduced visiting Rotarians and Guests, followed by the Welcome Song which was led by Joel Doss.  Two Service Above Self coins were given: to Alan Turner, for organizing the Oaks North Clean-up, and to Pat Chaffee, Program Chair for our next year.
This was our Birthday Celebration day. Five members with December and January birthdays were present today.  Yummy cake!
President Doug thanked todays Volunteers: Joel Doss, Alex Robertson and Alan Turner at the front desk, Pat Chaffee for set up, James Kaspar for photography, Rz Norris for Scribe, and John O’Neill, the Meeting Personnel Organizer.
Phil Warner spoke about needing drivers for the Vista Hill food delivery program.  This facility is located in El Cajon, and offers services for families in need as well as parent care.  Jim Reid announced that the Rotary Music Scholarship local competition will take place at next weeks meeting.  Rancho Bernardo and Del Norte High Schools will participate.  The meeting will begin at 12:15 next week to allow ample time for the competition.
The Bring Your Own Game activity has been postponed until the fall.  The Club will concentrate our fundraising efforts on the Vines and Vittles activity in July.  Do confirm your interest in the BYOG to Alan Turner and Judy Luttiken for later this year.
Don Glover presented a Foundation check to Michael Renne, director of the Poway Center for the Arts. Mr. Renne said the check will help with funding the Arts and Education program for children this spring.
Arilla passed a get well card around for Maguy Feghali, who recently had surgery, and a card to the family of Jack Mayo, past President of our Club and District Director, who died suddenly in Scotland. Our own Fine Master, John O’Neill, actually sought no fines today, but accepted many generous Happy Bucks.

Sandie Dewane introduced today’s speaker, Chris Busher, President of the Parkinson’s Association for San Diego County. He has a long history of working with Volunteer Service organizations, and helped get the San Diego Association up and running three years ago.  This group serves only the approximately 60,000 people with Parkinson’s Disease in San Diego County, and is not associated with other national Parkinson’s organizations. He also put in a plug for the “Step by Step” walk/run benefitting the local Association, on April 7th, 2019, beginning at 7:30 am.
Don Glover presented the speakers gift book today: “Thinking With Her Hands”.
