The first meeting of 2019 was called to order by newly bearded President Doug Dawson. Charley Crew, sporting an arm sling, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance. Mike Fuqua gave the inspirational message and Greeter Vern Cook welcomed visiting Rotarians and guests, including Mike Stelman. Jim Sommer stepped up to lead us in singing our welcome song and “America the Beautiful”.

President Doug thanked today’s volunteers: Front Desk – Joel Doss and John Kasser; Set Up Crew – Paul Donick, Pat Chaffee, Jim Reid; Photographer – James Kaspar; Pianist – John Hawkins; and Scribe – Sandie Dewane.
Mike Fuqua gave an update on Vines & Vittles and will follow up by emailing the report to everyone. Don Glover reminded us that the District Conference is scheduled for March 1-3 at the Catamaran Hotel on Mission Bay. Rotary Foundation Chair Dan Barrios talked about the Foundation’s Bequest Society in which a bequest can be made through a trust or will. He then had the pleasure of recognizing Cathy Glover with a new pin adorned with three rubies. Congratulations, Cathy!

President Doug mentioned that the TGIX for book labeling was cancelled as we already have the number of books needed for distribution. He also said it would be great to have a TGIX sometime in spring. If anyone is interested in hosting, please let him know.
Doug reported that he and Susan King met with BHCC management regarding our concerns about food service and variety. He also explained that it was necessary to increase the price to $25 per person as Rotary was losing money because we weren’t charging enough, over our costs, to pay for speaker and guest lunches.
Arilla St. Laurent gave today’s Family of Rotary report. Doreen Hoyt recently passed away. Her husband, Neal, was a member of our Club for many years.
Arilla then morphed into Fine Master in John O’Neill’s absence. She quickly fined Susan King for table-hopping between two all-male tables. Just when the guys were feeling a bit smug, she fined both tables for not being able to attract at least one female at each table. Don Glover was fined $20 for not adequately introducing a visiting Rotarian. Troy Daum topped everyone as he had the highest fine of all - $100 for his new Tesla! Happy bucks were given by many, including Arilla on behalf of her newlywed son.

Sandie Dewane introduced Vince Hall, CEO of Feeding San Diego, which is the county’s leading hunger relief agency and a member of Feeding America. Hunger is a daily struggle for 1 in 8 San Diegans, including 127,000 children. He explained that FSD is innovating creative new approaches to rescuing healthy food that would otherwise go to waste and using it to provide over 25 million meals per year across the county. In lieu of a speaker’s gift, our Club donates a book to Bernardo Heights Middle School Library in the speaker’s name. Jim Hyldahl did it again, but it was quite a stretch, to correlate a book title with the program topic. Thank you, Jim!

Upcoming programs: 1/10/19 (evening meeting) Nancy Canfield, Past President of RB Historical Society and Co-Chair of Vines & Vittles - “Why is History so Important and What’s up with Area Native Americans?”
1/17/19 Coronado Rotarian Kevin Ehlinger Wilde – “How Future Disruptive Technology Will Disrupt our Lives”
After a few jokes from President Doug, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
