RB Rotary Club Minutes

January 20, 2022 Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane

Co-President Athenea Luciano rang the bell and called the meeting to order.  We joined her in reciting the Four-Way Test.  New member Mark Alberts led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Arilla St. Laurent gave us an Inspirational message.  Athenea, filling in as Greeter, welcomed the Zoom participants and introduced 1 Visiting Rotarian and 2 guests.  Joel Doss welcomed them in song.

Thanks to today’s volunteers:  Bill Brehm, Room setup; Mary Doss, Pat Chaffee and Joel Doss, Front desk; James Kaspar, Photographer; Bill Angus, Newsletter; and Sandie Dewane, Scribe.

Arilla St. Laurent gave the Family of Rotary report.   Ken Heinz is recovering from back surgery; Pat Norfolk is home from the hospital; Charley Crew is back to 100%; Mira Bozanich is very frustrated because her broken right arm is preventing her from driving; and John O’Neill is recovering from a fall he had while leaving the doctor’s office.   Best wishes to all!

In John O’Neill’s absence, Arilla donned an Irish hat and filled in as Fine Mistress.  She received happy bucks from Bob Vaughn, Mike Stelman and Don Glover in anticipation of Pete Griffith joining our Club.  Our Speaker, Dr. Kristin Baranski also gave happy bucks and said to collect from Terry Heck.  At the last minute, a table of 4 men was noticed and she quickly fined them $10 each!  Arilla also gave happy bucks in honor of her daughter who is now cancer free.

Bob Vaughn reminded us of all the good things The Rotary Foundation does throughout the world and asked for our continuing donations.  Via Zoom, Bob then awarded Russ Haskell his 9th Paul Harris pin!

A check in the amount of $500 was presented to the Assistance League of Inland North County, which as been in Escondido for 35 years.  President Carole Comeau and President-elect Diana Towne were present to receive the check. Carole informed us about the many children’s programs the Assistance League supports.  She also mentioned that their thrift shop is known as the “Nordstrom of Thrift Shops.”

Terry Heck introduced Dr. Kristin Baranski, Superintendent of the Santee School District, as today’s speaker – via Zoom.   She has been an educator for 28 years, superintendent since 2017 and is a member of the Santee/Lakeside Rotary Club.  He also mentioned that she was his former boss.  Dr. Baranski gave a shout out to Terry as an award-winning principal as his school received the CA Distinguished School honor.

Dr. Baranski informed us that she tested positive for COVID and is thankful that she can present to us via Zoom.   She gave an excellent presentation about the COVID journey within her school district and how they were able to maintain a high-quality education for the District’s 6,600 students while utilizing various methods of teaching and learning, gradually integrating the students’ return to school.  Terry Heck thanked Dr. Baranski with a book that will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School in her name.

The next meeting is a lunch meeting on January 27.   The speaker is Jeff Poole, Explanation of Cryptocurrency.

The meeting was adjourned.
