January 19, 2023 Rotary Meeting Notes
By Sandie Dewane, Scribe
The meeting was called to order by President Alan Turner and we recited the 4-Way Test with him, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. He also served as Greeter and we welcomed all visiting Rotarians and Guests. Joel Doss led us in singing the Welcome Song. Thanks to today’s volunteers: Pat Chaffee and Joel Doss-Front Desk; Bob Vaughn-Room Set up and Sandie Dewane- Scribe.
President-Elect Jim Reid announced that the next Poway Symphony Orchestra concert is scheduled for Sunday, March 13th.
Arilla St. Laurent reported that Benita Page is recovering from a fall. Charley Crew informed us that John O’Neill is in the hospital. Arilla then morphed into the Fine Mistress and we acknowledged her with boisterous Boos. A few folks were fined immediately for not wearing their Rotary pins and she then asked for and received Happy Bucks.
President Alan was pleased to induct Emily Paup of Lucia Capital Group as a new corporate member and she received her temporary Red Badge, pin and materials. Sandie Dewane is her sponsor and mentor. Emily introduced John Leatherwood who will share the corporate membership with her. Alan happily thanked Emily and the Lucia firm for signing on as Presenting Sponsor for Vines & Vittles!
Club Foundation President Athenea Luciano had the pleasure of presenting a check in the amount of $500 to Glenn Rossman of Forever Balboa Park. The organization’s mission is to sustain, enhance and envision Balboa Park for all visitors in partnership with the City of San Diego, other park organizations and the community.
Bob Vaughn introduced special guest, Marta Knight, Past District Governor and District Foundation Chair, who presented Paul Harris awards to Diane Remick and Athenea Luciano. Marta gave examples of the timely world-wide support provided to those in need from The Rotary Foundation. Marta also presented two citations of excellence to Athenea, who served as our president for the 21-22 Rotary year.
Jim Hyldahl, Vines & Vittles Sponsorship Co-Chair, reminded us about the variety of services and programs our Club and RB Sunrise provide in our community and beyond. The funds raised from Vines & Vittles and the Sunrise Club’s Beernardo Festival enable us to continue our good works. This year we are introducing “Sponsor Teams” and each club member has been assigned to a team, led by a member of the Sponsorship Committee. This concept has been very successful with the Sunrise Club.
Mike Fuqua introduced Linnea Lagerstrom from Habitat for Humanity. Linnea gave an informative and interesting presentation about her organization and the criteria for families to receive a new home.
Our next meeting is at noon on January 26th and the speaker is Michael Arms from the Helen Woodward Animal Center.
Respectfully submitted,
