February 10th Rotary Meeting Notes
President Athenea kicked off the meeting by having the Rotarians recite the 4-Way Test. She then invited Ron Hunt to lead us through the pledge of allegiance. Ron started off by explaining how our flag became known as Old Glory. He also continued by telling us the easy way to dispose of a flag when it becomes worn or ragged. Just take it to any county library; they all have a disposal box for this purpose. The following volunteers were thanked: Greeter Ken Heinz, Pledge Ron Hunt, Inspirational Message Barb Alberts, Scribe John O'Neill, Bulletin Bill Angus, Front Desk Joel Doss, Mary Doss & Pat Chaffee.
Arilla St. Laurent took the mic for the Family of Rotary report. Bob Vaughn reported that his recent surgery is healing well. Since the tables were gaily decorated for Valentine’s Day courtesy of Arilla and her helpers, Terry Hunter and Barb Alberts, we were all quite happy munching on the sweet goodies they placed at each setting.
Finemaster John O’Neill asked the members to stand, and then told any one wearing red could sit. About half the members were not wearing red and John fined them $10 each. YO! He fined Bill Brehm for the ugly sandals with no socks and Resa Coopat for not wearing a Rotary pin. During Happy Bucks Shirley Napierala thanked the members who generously donated $1,720 for Adopt-A-Family at Christmas. Don Glover thanked the club volunteers who help out at the Food Connection and urged all club members to get involved in this worthwhile endeavor.
Mike Fuqua, president of the RB Rotary Foundation, invited Resa, Don and Dave Brooks up to the front to accept a $1,000 grant from the Foundation to support the Spirit of the Fourth festival and parade.
Athenea invited Doug Dawson (mentor) and Jim Sommer (sponsor) to the lectern to witness the induction of Tom Murphy as the newest member of Rotary. Welcome to the club Tom!
Gary Saks introduced our speaker and fellow Rotarian Richard Lederer. Richard is a well known word master, and has been a columnist for 10 years at the Union Tribune and has been honored as Punster of the Year. He gave us an entertaining and thorough walk through the fascinating world of language and word usage and meaning. It was a very interesting and clever presentation. After ending his talk, club member Cheryl Roop asked Richard to sign a book that will be given to the Bernardo Heights Middle School library in Rotary’s name.
President Athenea adjourned the meeting and rang the bell.
