Rotary Highlights
February 6. 2014
Jim Hyldahl was today’s greeter and gave all of us a hearty welcome. President Gary Saks called the meeting to order 15 minutes early to allow enough time for the 4-Way Test Speakers competition. Dave Brooks led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Ron Hunt gave the Invocation. President Gary thanked Bill Bonner who served as the one-man set-up crew; Greeter Jim Hyldahl and Scribe Sandie Dewane.
We had one visiting Rotarian today: Dan Dickinson from Scotts Bluff, Nebraska. Our guests consisted of RB High School students, family members and staff. Gary decided we would sing the “traditional” welcome song, but he may change the melody at the next meeting.
Karen Stelman gave the Family of Rotary report and said that Joyce Hunt is doing well and she appreciates everyone’s thoughtfulness. Gary also mentioned that Mark Kersey’s brother unexpectedly passed away from complications of the flu.
Gary will be sending individual emails with check information for members who wish to make a donation for Polio Plus and Poway Center for Performing Arts. Frances Blair is coordinating food donations to North County Interfaith. We can bring our non-perishable food donations to the next two meetings. Bill Angus announced that our annual golf tournament “Fairway to Honor” will be held at Bernardo Heights Country Club on April 28th and that the website and Registration is up and running. Early Bird rate discount code is rbrotary at registration check out to receive 10% off your tournament fees. That rate is good until March 3, 2014. Great job, Bill! Fine Master John O’Neill took it easy today as there wasn’t time for fines J.
Lisa Breen and Tesha Young took over the meeting with Lisa explaining the 4-Way Speech contest. In between speakers, Tesha had a fun quiz for all of us. We had the privilege of hearing five talented speakers and the judges had a difficult time choosing the first place recipient. Thank you Lisa & Tesha! Thanks also to our own “Madam Paparazzi” (Arilla St. Laurent) who took fabulous photos of the students which will be submitted to the newspaper.
President Gary announced that next week’s meeting will have a Valentine theme and our speaker will be Ronald McDonald House CEO Chuck Day.
