Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club
August 8, 2019

Prior to the start of the meeting, Mike Stelman introduced Kay Lettington and Peggy Johnson from the “Quilts of Valor”, who awarded our Club Co-President, David King, with the honor of receiving an exceptional, hand made quilt, commending his excellent service record in the Marine Corp. This came as a complete surprise to David, and the Club members showed their appreciation with a warm round of applause.

Co-President Susan then called the meeting to order and led the citing of The Four Way Test, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance, led by Mike Stelman. The Inspirational Message was given by Toby Westbrook.

The greeter for the evening recognized visiting Rotary Members, Peggy Johnson and Kay Lettington, who announced an upcoming golf tournament of the Sunrise Rotary Club, and welcoming our Club members to participate in the tournament to benefit Scholarships for Native American students from non-gaming tribes. Other guests were also recognized, and treated to a rousing chorus of the Club Welcome song.

Co-President Susan thanked the Volunteers for the evening: Scribe, Rz Norris, Front Desk, Joel Doss, Dan Malloy and Diane Remick. The setup crew was John Kasser and friends, our official Photographer was James Kaspar.  Meeting organizer, John O’Neill was also thanked.

Co-President Susan spoke of the weekend tragedies of the shootings that occurred in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.  We had a moment of silence for those victims.

Reminders of the TGIX at Jim Hyldahls home on August 17th and the Day at the Races on August 21st.  Mike Stelman spoke again on the Poinsettia Fund raiser.

Mike Stelman introduced Sergeant Major Michael Walton, USMC at Miramar, who spoke in depth about the importance and meaning of the Leadership Sword that is awarded to the top Non-Commissioned Officer of each graduating class. This is gift that is supported by proceeds of our Poinsettia drive this fall.  Mike encouraged everyone to participate in this fund raiser.

Arilla welcomed Karen Stelman back to the club following her recent back surgery. She also mentioned that Susan and David had donated blood in Maureen Rouleau’s name, and that Maureen gave personal thanks. Susan suggested that Club member blood donors take a photo to send to her.

Our intrepid Fine Master, John O’Neill, handed out some interesting fines, and lots of happy bucks were received from Club members.

Pat Chaffee introduced guest speaker Kim Muslusky of the local “Thousand Smiles Foundation”. Kim is also a past International Director of the Foundation. This Foundation provides dental and surgical services to children world wide.
The Speakers’ book, “The William Gustoff Story”, was presented to Kim by Terry Heck.
