Meeting Minutes

August 6, 2020

President Alex Robertson brought our Zoom meeting to order at 11:02 am and led us in reciting the 4 Way Test.

The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Joe Gandelman (with help from a friend).

Joe spent many years working overseas and loved visiting our embassies where he was treated like family.   Terry Heck inspired us with a remembrance of the song “We Are the World; We Are the Children”.  He related several examples of the things young people have accomplished.

We had four visitors today:  Barb Crew, Jeanene Cook, Joanne Hyldahl and Didi Saks.  Maestro Joel Doss was absent today, and we spared our visitors another Zoom-addled performance of our sonorous Welcome Song.

Alex thanked our volunteers:  Zoom hosting by Mike Fuqua, Bill Angus for doing the newsletter; meeting organization by John O’Neill and these words by your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.

Club Foundation President Mike Fuqua gave a presentation about what our club foundation does, including the slide below that shows the difference between our foundation and The Rotary Foundation, which is based in Evanston, IL.  These two are often confused.

President Alex emphasized that all checks going to The Rotary Foundation should be sent to Dan Barrios at this address:

18189 Chretien Ct.

San Diego, Ca. 92128

Alex then told us that Jennifer Jones has been named as president of Rotary International for the year 2022-23. She will be the first woman to hold this job in the 115 years RI has existed. Jennifer has been a member of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland, Ontario, Canada since 1997. She is a past district governor and was RI Vice president in 2016-17.  She is currently a trustee of the Rotary Foundation.

WINDSOR, ON. AUGUST 8, 1992 - Jennifer Jones of the Rotary Club of Windsor-Roseland has been named the Rotary International's president for 2022-23. She is shown at her LaSalle, ON. home on Saturday, August 8, 2020. (DAN JANISSE - The Windsor Star)

Treasurer Pat Chaffee told us that we collected $2700 of Happy Bucks during July.  President Alex named him “Rotarian of the Month” for coordinating the Happy Bucks bookkeeping and his work with Joel Doss on the program to sell Rotary-branded face masks.  Per Don Glover, the Rotary clubs of Ramona and Poway-Scripps are buying 20 and 25 masks respectively.

Terry Heck talked about the need for club members to step up and become committee chairs for the many activities we engage in.  He gave two examples in Youth Service:  1) we need someone to work with the Interact Club at Del Norte High School and 2) when Model UN resumes, we will need an advisor to work with the students we send to that assembly.

Past District Governor Mike Stelman reminded us of our Poinsettia Fundraiser which supports the military at the Marine Corps Air Station in Miramar.  Boxes of 8 plants are available for $100.  Checks payable to the club can go to Joel with designation for this cause.

The Family of Rotary from Past President Arilla St. Laurent:  Joel has a lump on his neck and is seeing a doctor today.  Jim Sommer is having foot surgery this morning.  Felix Luciano is getting a second opinion on 8/7 regarding his knee surgery.  Arilla sent a card to Jo Casterline just to wish her well.  Jo is not sick and last week gave a great tour of her home garden to the Crews.

Finemaster Supreme John O’Neill levied no fines and cheerfully presided over Happy Bucks.  Alex was happy to the tune of $25 to say that he is very pleased with the progress being made by a couple of groups on new ways to raise funds for the club.

Past President John Goodrich introduced our speaker Ron Hunt.  Ron is also a past president (1974-75) and joined RB Rotary in 1971.  He is therefore our longest-serving member.

He told us many stories about the club’s early history that were very informative and entertaining.

President Alex adjourned our meeting at 12:31 pm.
