August 20, 2020

President Alex opened the Zoom meeting early for us to chit chat before we got started.  It's a nice sag way into our meeting.  As always, we started with reciting the 4 Way Test and most of us finally know the words!  Michael Ortiz led us in the pledge after telling us some very interesting background.  Karen Stelman gave the Inspirational Message and Arilla was our Virtual Greeter welcoming any new guests that appeared.  Joel led us in our Welcome Song.  (We definitely need work)!  Mike Fuqua was ever present at the beginning, setting up the Zoom connection, Karen was scribe and Bill Angus sets up the newsletter.
We had a very nice visitor today whose name is Frank Fournier.  He went to Poway High,  studied Micro Biology in college and was/is?a professional rugby player!  Hope he liked our meeting and will come back.

President Alex introduced John O'Neill to explain our new Couch Potato Fund Raiser.  The nice thing about this one is there is no money needed to participate.  We work with different businesses by getting approved and then using their services.  A small portion of what you actually spend is tracked (in different ways) by the store or by sending in receipts quarterly.  These are a few on the places we'll be working with:

Approved and up and running.....

1.  Major Market in Escondido:  Just do your regular shopping and give your receipts to Arilla.  She will send them in and we will get a percentage back that Major Market sends directly to our Club Foundation.

2.  Smile Amazon (same perks as Amazon Prime)   Just go to Amazon and type in Smile Amazon, mention The RB Rotary Club Foundation and order your items as always.  There are some things that aren't eligable but it will always say so.  They keep track of your orders and again, give a small percentage back to our Foundation.  Very EZ!

3.  Ralphs Super Market:     If you don't have a Ralphs Loyalty Card, just go to the Customer Service Counter and get one on the spot.  Tell them we have a rebate program for The Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club Foundation and they will link that to your card for your rebate.  ALWAYS have them swipe your card up front.

We are pursuing others but some are a little more complicated so this will be a work in progress.
Our committee is:  John O'Neill, Dave Brooks, Judy Lutticken, Arilla St. Laurent, and Karen Stelman
John Goodrich introduced todays' speaker, Cheri Pierre, CEO of Computers 2 Kids in San Diego.  Her company provides reworked computers to qualified families throughout San Diego County.  One in four children are without access to computers.  There are 700,000 to 1,000,000 children without internet.   90% of our schools are starting with remote learning.  This presents a huge problem in making sure all our school aged children will be able to take advantage of learning at home.

At any given time, they have between 18,000 to 26,000 used computers to clean up, sanitize and loan to children who need them.  Our member, Alan Turner who is working with Title One,  identifying elementary schools in need and supply about 10 families per school with funds for the internet.  Their group is offering to pay for the first years cost with the help of Cox who has offered to provide assistance.  Terry Heck presented Cheri with a very appropriate book as a speaker gift, put her name in it and deliver it to our middle school library.

In the Q and A afterwards, many of our club members said they had old computers just sitting around the house and would love to find a place like this to donate their relics.  Everyone was so happy to know there is a home for those computers.  Computers 2 Kids will clean and sanitize them all before distribution.
Contact Alan Turner to remotely "attend" the District Membership Seminar on line.  There's room for 70 people where they will learn information about recruiting, the induction process of Red Badgers and retention.  He can give you the details.

Dan Barrios, our Rotary Int'l Foundation representative, has many members that have attained different levels of Paul Harris Fellow status.  Since he can't present them in person, he wants these members to be recognized and applauded for their contribution to the Rotary Foundation.  He plans on delivering them to each person by leaving them at their front door.  He will call and let the recipient know he's been there!

Congratulations to you all!!

Bill Brehm, who does a wonderful job setting up our room when we are at BHCC, had some time to redo a  banner from visiting Rotarians.  He used one large banner and filled it with the smaller guest banners from all over the world.  He still has more and may embark on a second one given the time.  A big thanks to Bill for taking the initiative!

Our next meeting is on August 27th at 11:00 a.m.  Our guest speaker is Barbara Johnson speaking on Human Trafficking (Overview)

Stay well, stay involved and have fun!
