Meeting Minutes
August 18, 2022
Vice President Cathy Glover rang the bell to open our meeting and led us in reciting the Four Way Test.
Past District Governor Mike Stelman led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Vern Cook inspired us with a description of the Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial. Here veteran’s plaques are presented without regard to rank, gender, or years of service. You can read more about the memorial here: https://soledadmemorial.org/
Resa Coopat welcomed our visitors.
Then the marvelously kinetic Joel Doss led us in a brassy, vibrant rendition of our astounding welcome song.
Cathy thanked our volunteers including photographer Bill Brehm, financial guru Pat Chaffee and your humble scribe, Dave Brooks.
Ken Heinz gave his Who-Am-I. Ken was a long-time member of the San Diego North Rotary Club, which dissolved last year. He transferred to our club, and we now support Mt. Carmel High School with scholarships. We may also continue to support the Cross-Country Fun Run which he helped organize for many years. Ken has 3 children and 6 grandchildren.
And he then received his gold badge from Don Glover.
Don then informed us that the club board has chosen Past President Gary Saks to be honored at the Hats Off to Volunteers event along with about 60 other Rancho Bernardo volunteers. The ceremony will be held on October 15th at the RB High School Performing Arts Center. Congratulations, Gary!
After a successful session as Fine Master, John O’Neill gave us a Family of Rotary update on Arilla St. Laurent. Arilla will meet with her surgeon on August 23rd to discuss the fitting of a prosthesis that will allow her to walk. Here she is looking great while attending Vines & Vittles with Chuck.
Charley Crew then introduced our speaker, Paul Devine. Paul has been the General Manager of The Heights Golf Club for 3 years. He explained that the recent name change was for 2 reasons. First, there are many competing facilities in the area with “Bernardo” in the name and it was too easy to confuse them. Second, most “country clubs” have a swimming pool and tennis courts and his facility has neither. Therefore, the new name focuses on the excellent golf course and clubhouse we meet in.
Cathy adjourned today’s meeting at 1:30 pm.
