Rotary Club of Rancho Bernardo
August 15, 2024 Scribe Notes
By Sandie Dewane

The meeting was called to order by President Terry Heck and we recited the 4 Way Test and Pledge of Allegiance with him. He thanked today’s volunteers: Greeter-Dan Barrios; Scribe-Sandie Dewane; AV-Dave Brooks; Front Desk-Pat Chaffe, Joel Doss; Photographer – Bill Brehm; Sgt.at Arms-Joel Doss; Book Presenter-Cheryl Roop. Greeter Dan Barrios welcomed two guests and Joel welcomed them in song.

Gary Saks introduced today’s speaker: Jeff Zevely from Channel 8 News. Most of us know Jeff from his uplifting “Zevely Zone” segment on the news. Jeff is personable, funny, caring and we enjoyed his entertaining presentation. Cheryl Roop presented a book for his signature which will be donated to the Bernardo Heights Middle School library.

We celebrated August birthdays. There were about four of us with August birthdays, including Alan Turner whose birthday was today. Alan’s daughter, Christine Testa, decorated his chair with a Happy Birthday balloon. Thanks to Shirley Napierala for providing the yummy cake😊.
Family of Rotary: Sandie Dewane reported that she was filling in as scribe for Sonny Googins who was in the hospital. Mike Stelman informed us that she would be going home today. Take care, Sonny, we hope to see you soon.
Happy Bucks: Bob Vaughn collected happy bucks from Pat Chaffee, Gary Saks, Charlene Zettel and Barbara Noerenberg. Bill Brehm and Dave Brooks gave self-imposed fines because they forgot to wear their name badges.

Who Am I? Mark Alberts gave an interesting talk about growing up on the east coast. He mentioned two things that had the greatest impact on his life – meeting his lovely Barb and working with Northwestern Mutual! He and Barb moved to San Diego to be closer to their two sons and families.
President Terry announced that an amazing Silent Auction will be coming soon! It is a 3 day stay in San Felipe, Mexico including accommodations, transportation, meals, golf, etc. This fabulous silent auction item is generously donated by Pat and Rita Chaffee. Bidding will start soon. Proceeds will benefit our Club’s budget.

Mike Stelman announced that it’s time to begin our Annual Poinsettia Fundraiser in support of the military at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Flyers are available at every table. He encouraged everyone to help with this worthwhile project. For more information, please contact Mike.
