The Opening Bell
President Jim Reid reassured us that every day is a great day to be a Rotarian and led us in the Four-Way Test and the Pledge.
Meeting Volunteers

Anvil of Hope/Cheese Expo (flyer on table)
The Vista Hill Fashion Show/Luncheon on April 19 was extremely successful.
NAMI Walk will be on April 27
Hats Off To Volunteers awards ceremony will be on April 27.
Vines & Vittles
Alan Turner reminded us that every club member has a job in our annual Vines & Vittles fundraiser and encouraged everyone to sign up for one. The festival will be on June 1 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. in Webb Park and is targeting to raise more than $100,000, which will be used to support worthy organizations in our community.

A kickoff mixer for the event will be held on May 9 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Lucia Capital Group.
Operations Flags for Vets
In observance of Memorial Day volunteers are needed to place American flags at the headstones of graves at the Miramar National Cemetery on Saturday, May 25 at 2:30 p.m. Volunteers are also needed to retrieve the flags for storage on May 28 at 3 p.m. For more information go to the District website. The District pays for the purchase of the flags.
Rotary Cleanup Day for the Seven Oaks Community

The Seven Oaks Community clean-up on April 20 with 38 club volunteers and 13 student volunteers led by Jim Hyldahl was a great success. Kudos to Jim and Susan Lewallen for all the planning and for the execution.
Assistance League of North County
The organization was presented with a $2,000 check from the Rotary Foundation to support its good works.
A Paul Harris Very Good Fellow
Pat Chaffee was presented with a pin recognizing his fourth contribution as a Paul Harris Fellow.
Family of Rotary
Sandie welcomed back Diane Remick who is reports relief of pain for her back through physical therapy. She welcomed Mike Fuqua who returned after a hip replacement just two weeks ago – quite an amazing recovery. Katie Hunter got an exciting surprise during our luncheon when she was notified that she won airfare to Fiji for two.
Report on Law Enforcement
San Diego Police Captain Mike Holden focused on the police department’s efforts to curb drug deaths and explained the extent of the problem in our community and the state.
In 2022, the last year for which statistics are available, there were 7,385 deaths in California related to opioid overdose. Of that number 6,473 of the deaths were related to Fentanyl overdoses. The number of prescriptions in the state for opioids in 2022 were 13,640,794.
Fentanyl deaths in San Diego County have increased at an alarming rate since 2016 when the number of deaths were 33. That number jumped to 462 in 2000 and nearly doubled to 814 in 2021 and 2022.
