April 18, 2019 Meeting Notes by Sandie Dewane

The meeting was called to order by President Doug Dawson. Phil Warner led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and Gary Saks gave us the Inspirational Message based on quotes from Andy Rooney. Greeter Dan Malloy welcomed 3 guests and led us in singing the Welcome Song. President Doug thanked the following volunteers: Front Desk- Joel Doss, Dan Barrios, Arilla St. Laurent; Set Up Crew-Paul Donick, Jim Reid; Photographer-James Kaspar; Meeting Organizer-
John O’Neill and Scribe – Sandie Dewane.

Prior to the Announcements, Arilla auctioned off a bouquet of flowers; RZ Norris was the highest bidder.

Sandie Dewane reported that the Vines & Vittles Sponsorship Committee is making good progress in securing sponsorships from companies and businesses where they have working relationships. She mentioned that Bill Brehm has proven success in asking people he does business with to sponsor. She asked the members to talk with their contacts at companies/businesses where they do business – tell them about Vines & Vittles and the benefit
sponsors receive on every level. If your contact/business is not interested, ask them if they know of someone who might want to participate. Sponsorships start at the Donor level which is $250 – most companies can fit that into their budgets.

While Sandie had the microphone, she announced that the next TGIX is on Wednesday, May 15 to Lions, Tigers & Bears, an exotic animal rescue sanctuary located in Alpine. Plans are to carpool from RB at 9:00 that morning. Registration at 10:00 a.m., guided tour from 10:30 – 12:30 p.m. Cost is $37 per person (for groups of 20 or more). Please wear comfortable shoes as there are uneven, unpaved walking areas. Also bring a hat, sunscreen and water. For those interested, an optional, no host lunch at D.Z. Akins Restaurant, Deli and Bakery after the tour. A sign-up sheet was passed around.

Terry Heck reminded us about the Wine Caravan scheduled for Sunday, April 28 from Noon – 4:00 p.m. Interested members should let Terry know. The purpose, other than tasting wine and having fun, is to hopefully get wine sponsors for Vines & Vittles. He requested that each car have a designated driver who will not be one of the wine tasters!

Jim Reid told us about the energetic and enthusiastic RYLA weekend camp held in Julian. We will have the opportunity to meet some of the students and leaders on May 30 for the RYLA celebration.

President Doug reported for Vern Cook that the Military “Stand Down” event is coming up and our annual socks and underwear drive (for males and females) is taking place until mid-May. Please bring your donations to our weekly meetings.

Foundation President Don Glover had the pleasure of presenting a check to Poway Unified School District for its technology summer camp for low-income students. The camp is a way for the students to have fun with math, science and technology which, in turn, gives them confidence to pursue these subjects in their future studies.

Jim Hyldahl mentioned that our Rotary at Work day is Saturday, May 4 th at Seven Oaks. About 25-30 volunteers are needed to help. Please be at Seven Oaks Community Center at 7:30 a.m.

Dan Barrios reported on the Paul Harris Fellowship. Our club is still #1 in per capita giving in our District and he encouraged us to continue being #1! He also had the pleasure of presenting a Paul Harris pin with 3 sapphires to Mike Fuqua. Congratulations and thank you, Mike!

Arilla St. Laurent served as Fine Master and even though she was booed, she let everyone off easy by asking for Happy Bucks. Among those willing to part with some dollars: Dan Barrios, Mira Bozanich, Pat Chaffee, Charley Crew, Troy Daum, Paul Donick, Brian Flaherty, Alex Robertson and Bob Vaughn.

Jim Hyldahl introduced today’s speaker: Sal Mariscal, a cancer survivor, who volunteers his time talking to groups about his experience with prostate cancer. He stressed the importance of sharing information, talking with others, researching treatment choices and learning about the side effects of chemotherapy, radiation and surgery. He determined that proton therapy was the best treatment choice for him. www.cancerai.net (Cancer Awareness Initiative). Terry
Heck presented the speaker’s gift – a book for his signature, which is donated to Bernardo Heights Middle School.
