ROTARY CLUB OF RANCHO BERNARDO

   April 16, 2020

    (Via “ZOOM)

President Dave King called the meeting to order at 11:12 AM, a bit late due to some members having problems signing on to ZOOM. Also, the internet connection had some problems with sound and picture continuity.

President Dave led the Four Way Test, followed by a video of Evangelo Morris reciting a rousing version of the monologue “Old Glory”, which in turn was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Felix Luciano gave the inspirational message.  Joel led a splintered rendition of our Welcome Song.

The membership was in varying stages of “casual”, with some drinking their morning coffee while others relaxed in the sun on their patios.

Mike Fuqua said he would email all of the members on Sunday with the link for next week’s meeting.  He suggested that the email be saved for easy access to the ZOOM meeting site.

Treasurer Pat Chaffee said the email “Happy Bucks” total is now $3,112! He reminded us that our checks can be designate for either to the Club or the Club Foundation, then mailed to the Club PO Box 28501 (92128). If there is no designation the money will go to the Club.

Vice President Don said the Club Board met last Thursday regarding the cancelling of some Foundation and Grant projects due to the COVID-19. The Board has elected to award the monies for:

      * PUSD Youth in Transition Program - $1,500

*Vista Hill – COVID-19 Emergency Relief for Families - $2,000

      *Interfaith – COVID-19 Emergency Program - $5,000

*First Responders, Health Care Workers, PUSD Family in Need Program, purchasing

$5,000 Worth of Gift Certificates for food from 10 V&V Vendors.

A total of $13,500 in Grants from our Rancho Bernardo Rotary Club Foundation to support local
COVID-19 relief programs.

Vice President Don said one position on the board remained open, Foundation Board Member at Large, and Judy Lutticken has volunteered to fill it.  Her appointment will be presented to the Club Board for approval, then to the Club membership for the vote.

Past President Doug Dawson said he had been contacted by the Tia Juana Rotary Club asking for donations for COVID-19 relief below the border.  He said our Club will not donate to them, as our community needs come first, but that individual members may contribute if they wish and Doug will forward the money to them.  Contact Doug for information.

Arilla said that members of the Rotary Clubs in the I15 corridor have been making masks to give to health workers in the Palomar Pomerado district, but have been informed that N95 masks have been supplied to those services.  The clubs now have a number of masks available to donate, possibly to area Senior Living Facilities. Cathy Glover can be contacted regarding donations.

President Dave King said he has completed 50 hours of on line training for volunteer work, but because of the COVID-19, so far no one has come forward asking for a volunteer.

Dan Barrios said he has 10 Paul Harris certificates to award, which will have to wait until in person meetings resume.  He also said that our Club has not yet reached the 100% mark for donations to the Rotary Foundation.

Arilla St. Laurent, Family of Rotary, named several members who are ill or in the hospital, and said she was sorry that Get Well cards from the Club were not available to send because of the current stay at home orders.

Fine Master, John O’Neill, elected not to fine those not wearing their Rotary pins, since he had forgotten to wear his also.  Givers of Happy Bucks were many and generous today!

Our program today was “Who Am I?” talks.

Joel Doss tagged himself as an original hippie and Navy brat growing up. He had several interesting occupations including cattle ranching and newspaper distribution for the Hearst empire in the Monterey Bay area before he migrated to the San Diego area. He thanks Jim Hyldahl and Don Glover for getting him interested in Rotary here in Rancho Bernardo.  His hobbies include marathon and triathlon events.

Dan Barrios is a regular guy who was born at home. He joined the National Guard following school and was then activated and commissioned in 1965. Following his release from the military Don worked with the space program. He and wife Francie moved to San Diego where he worked with SDG&E for 29 years.  They have 2 sons. Don joined Rotary in 1981, and joined the Rancho Bernardo Club in 2015. They lost their home in the Witch Creek fire in 2007. (Sorry, Don didn’t get back to me with more information 😒. People talk faster than I can write.)

Meeting was adjourned with a reminder to save Mike’s email with the address for next week’s ZOOM meeting, 11:00AM.
