ROTARY CLUB OF RANCHO BERNARDO
April 15. 2021, Zoom
After a slight technical delay, President Alex called the meeting to order. Jan Goldsmith led the Pledge of Allegiance wearing his red, white and blue shirt. The inspirational message was given by Vern Cook. Because of the early delay, the visitor greeting by Don Glover and the welcome portion of the meeting, with Joel Doss, were skipped.
President Alex thanked the volunteers: Alan Turner for the Zoom set up, Rz Norris for Scribe and Bill Angus for the Newsletter.
Arilla St. Laurent said there was no Family of Rotary report, and went straight to her role as Fine Mistress, collecting many Boo’s, and lots of Happy Bucks’. No fines today.
President Alex announced today’s annual Club Assembly.
Treasurer’s report, by Patrick Chaffee: The Club bank account is now with Bank of America. Because of the COVID 19 lockdown, Club funds have increased, primarily due to income from having no luncheon meetings. The Club has no liabilities. Major expenses have been District and RI dues. The Club Foundation has assets from invested monies.
Membership report by Alan Turner: We have lost a few members, and gained a few members, but overall membership is down. He suggests Club members actively help recruit for membership expansion, seeking younger members, more women, and more racially diverse members from the community. Active involvement and training will help with member retention. The “Fireside Chat” will be re-introduced for Club members.
Brand report by President Alex Robertson: In trying to create a more visible place in the community, the Brand Committee has created a new logo for the Club and is kicking off the program by purchasing new Club shirts and badges for the membership. All members should help with recruitment from friends, other organizations, and publicity to promote interest in our programs. He outlined ways for the Club to be more recognizable in the community.
Youth report by Terry Heck: 3 of our 4 way test Club contestants went to sub regional, and 2 went to regionals but did not place (Russ Haskell, chair). There is a record number of participants in the RYLA program this year. The Club is sponsoring 39 students from Del Norte and Rancho Bernardo, paying for 26 ( Jim Reed, Chair). Club Foundation scholarships (Gary Saks and Russ Haskell, Co-Chairs) will award $14,500 to 11 students, 7 of which are special needs students. The awards will be May 13, at the 5:30 Zoom meeting.
District and Global Grants reported by Doug Dawson: Only $1,750 was awarded this year. $3000 is available from District Matching funds this year to support local causes. Maximum Grant is $10,000. Requests for grant due by Aug. 1, through District Grant Coordinator Alan Turner. Global Grants must include one non-US club and one US club, and are limited to $80,000 for ’21-’22. This year we joined other Clubs to fund $261,00 in grants. Our Club can match up to $3,000, the District up to $10,000. This year “the Environment” has be added to the seven “areas of focus”.
Rotary Foundation report by Dan Barrios: The Club has donated over $760,000 since it began, and has donated $47,000 so far this year. This year only 86% of Club members have donate $100. For the past 3 years the Club donations have been 100% of the membership, and received recognition from the District for being #1 in giving. This year thus far, we are # 2 in the district behind La Mesa. Dan would like to see the Club at the 100% mark again this year. This is a tax deductible gift. If you are one of the members who haven’t donated $100 to the RI Foundation, he asks for your support to bring the Club up to the 100% mark for the year.
Don Glover reminded us that the Club Blood Drive is this coming Saturday at the Albertsons’ parking lot, Corner of Rancho Bernardo Road and Pomerado Road in Rancho Bernardo.
The next Zoom meeting for the Club will be April 22nd. The speaker will be Dana Goodrow, from San Diego Mentorship Network.
