Rotary meeting minutes for 9/7/2017

President Mike Fuqua opened the meeting by leading us in the traditional Rotary Motto. He then recognized volunteers Bill Brehm as Greeter, Ron Hunt for reciting the Pledge and Joel Doss, Karen Stelman and Kathleen Smith for manning the check-in desk. Also thanked were Dave Brooks, who filled in as our club photographer, and John O’Neill as Scribe.

President Mike called on Joe Max to deliver his monthly dose of humor, a slightly sacrilegious take with a St. Peter theme. Announcements were made concerning donations to the Hurricane Harvey and encouragement to join many other club members in attending the September 23rd District 5340 44th Annual Foundation Seminar. The event will be held at the Poway Center for Performing Arts from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

Shirley Napierala was called to the podium and was presented with a People of Action award for all of her fine work. El Presidente then updated us on the latest progress in increasing Interact membership at RBHS and DNHS, a project that has been actively managed by our own Phil Warner, a tireless advocate for our high school Interact clubs. Jim Hyldahl reported on the status of a senior outreach program in the Seven Oaks community. He is working on developing fresh new ideas to help the seniors.

A memorial service for longtime RB Rotarian Pat Kinney will held at 10:00 AM on Friday September 22nd at the San Rafael Catholic Church. The church is located at 17252 Bernardo Center Dr,
Finemaster John O’Neill called on Gary Saks as to explain why he failed to pay for his wife, Didi, and her guest who attended today’s meeting. It was a pricey omission. Many generous Rotarians donated Happy Bucks. Thanks to all of you.

President Mike introduced our speaker, Rick Shea, President of the San Diego County Board of Education. He provided us with a thorough overview of county and state programs, as well as how the school system functions.

Our speaker for the September 14th evening meeting will be Larry Trautner, who will be discussing issues surrounding nuclear power.
The meeting was adjourned with a remembrance of September 11th.
John O’Neill, Scribe
