Meeting Minutes
September 22, 2016
Our first meeting in a tent adjacent to BHCC started off with a bang……well a crash actually. The wind blew the tent wall into the portable screen we hang the club banners from. The screen fell over and hit the TV. The TV, in true domino fashion, also fell over and the screen shattered into many pieces. R.I.P. TV, but well-timed because today’s speakers, our own Jim Hyldahl and Troy Daum, needed no AV support for their talk.We will be in the tent until mid-November. NOTE: the floor has a heavy carpet and is uneven in some spots; please take care while walking around.
President Benita brought the meeting to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by past President Troy Daum. Past President Jim Sommer led us in singing “It’s a Grand Old Flag”. Past President Dan Malloy inspired us with some thoughts about the advantages of marching to the beat of a different drummer. Our greeter today was the effervescent and effusive John Goodrich. We had one visitor, Joanne Hyldahl. Doug Dawson did a great job leading us in our welcome song.
Benita thanked our volunteers: room setup by Doug Dawson, Vern Cook and past President Paul Donick; check-in by Joel Doss and past President Kathleen Smith; photography by James Kaspar; past President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, past President Dave Brooks.
Dave gave the Family of Rotary report which focused on Don and Suzie Lisio. Don, who had fallen and hit his head earlier this month, was hospitalized on 9/19 with severe head pain. He was discharged on 9/21 and came home to be with Suzie. They now have a full-time caregiver. She is pain-free and looking forward to Don’s complete recovery so they can join other Rotarians for dinner, especially including margaritas.Benita also noted that past President Jim Wise has asked for a leave of absence; his wife Sue is fighting breast cancer.
Next week we will be joined by members of the Miramar Club. President-elect Mike Fuqua will run the meeting during Benita’s absence.
Benita announced 4 upcoming District 5340 events: a high tea celebrating 30 years of women in Rotary on 9/25; the annual Foundation Seminar on 10/8 at USD; the Rotary Leadership Institute on 10/22 and the Rotary Foundation Dinner and Cruise on San Diego Bay on 11/5. She also announced that the community service event at Ronald McDonald House on October 5th has been cancelled. Also that there will be a golf tournament benefitting the Boys & Girls Club on October 28th.
Frances Blair has initiated the Greeting Card Project. We will meet at 4 locations on October 18th to sign 1125 holiday cards which will be sent to active duty service members throughout the world. Locations of these meetings will follow. It was time to celebrate September birthdays and we had a special one: Joe Max turns 99!!!!! Others born during this month are Doug Dawson, Jim Hyldahl and Joel Doss. We sang “Happy Birthday” to them all and had some tasty cake.
Club foundation president Gary Saks announced that members requesting matching gifts and grants should submit their applications (forms are available on the club’s website) by October 27th.
Benita announced that the club board had approved $1000 for a Shelter Box for Italy earthquake relief.
Dick Norfolk received his gold badge after fulfilling all requirements, which President Benita pointed out take up 2 pages.
Frances then put on her FINE PERSON hat and extracted a bunch of $$ from the membership. Following on last week’s theme, she fined people not here last week $10 who have or will take a vacation in September.
Speaker chair Vern Cook introduced master chefs Jim Hyldahl and Troy Daum who gave us a great presentation on smoking fish and meat. During their talk they gave away prizes and some of the very items they were preparing in front of us.President Benita closed the meeting with quote about how we age.
