Meeting Minutes
September 15, 2016

President Benita brought the meeting to order and the Pledge of Allegiance was led by past President Jim Hyldahl.  Jim regaled us with some history about the Pledge.  Past President Ron Hunt inspired us with some football quotes from Joe Namath and Vince Lombardi.

Our greeter today was Maguy Faghali and we had one visiting Rotarian, Efren Morales from the Rotary Club of Iba in the Philippines.  Assistant Treasurer Joel Doss did his usual great job leading us in our welcome song.

Benita thanked our volunteers:  room setup by Sgt. at Arms Judy Lutticken, Doug Dawson, Vern Cook and past President Paul Donick; check-in by Joel Doss; photography by James Kaspar; past President Bill Angus for doing the newsletter and these words by your humble scribe, past President Dave Brooks.

The Family of Rotary report was a sad one this time.  Past President Karen Stelman told us that we lost Bud Fellows.  Bud joined Rotary in 1965 and was a past president of the Rotary Club of Menlo Park.  He came to RB Rotary in 2001.   Frances Blair told us that Sherry Collins has passed away after a long battle with cancer.  The club will be sending a card to her husband Larry Adams, but if you’d like to send one too his address is 55276 Firestone, La Quinta, CA  92253.

Jo Casterline has an infection in her foot.  Instead of an auction, the club members each chipped in a dollar and bought the flowers from Cozy Posies; James Kaspar delivered them to her after the meeting.  She was delighted.

Benita announced that we can order club polo shirts which are a snappy turquoise color and will have “Rancho Bernardo Rotary” and the Rotary wheel embroidered on them.  She then directed our attention to the north windows where we could all see a large tent that had been erected outside.  We will be meeting there for the next 3 weeks while ClubCorp upgrades our meeting room.   She then read us a note from the new librarian at Bernardo Heights Middle School thanking us for the donated books.

Benita reminded us of 4 upcoming District 5340 events: a high tea celebrating 30 years of women in Rotary on 9/25; the annual Foundation Seminar on 10/8 at USD; the Rotary Leadership Institute on 10/22 and the Rotary Foundation Dinner and Cruise on San Diego Bay on 11/5.  Wow, Rotary does keep us busy!

Frances announced the Greeting Card Project.  She has obtained 1125 holiday cards from Current Catalog at a great price.  We will gather in groups of 6 to 8 in 4 locations and sign each of these cards which will be sent to active duty service members throughout the world.  Dates and locations of these meetings will follow.

Frances then put on her FINE PERSON hat and extracted a bunch of $$ from the membership. For example, she fined everyone $10 who has or will take a vacation in September.

Speaker chair Vern Cook introduced Joe Parker who spoke about Palomar Health Home Care.  They have a staff of 135 professionals who made 11487 home visits in FY 2016.

President Benita closed the meeting with 2 quotes about caring for seniors.
