This Tree Project Day is gaining momentum-primarily from the excitement from Abraxas.

President Mike called the Nov 2nd meeting to order at 12:30 P.M.at the Bernardo Heights Country Club, celebrating 54 years of Service Above Self. A unique Pledge observation was brought in by Charlie Crew. We enjoyed a video of comedian Robin Williams' performance from years ago in which he, his physical body in a flag sweater, personified the flag.i The comments, gestures and nuances were incredibly apt for today. Thank you, Charlie. Troy Daum followed with Thomas Edison as his inspiration. It was noted that Edison had no formal education and was responsible for an immense number of inventions, including the light bulb and battery and motion picture camera. An Edison motto: "Seeming to do, is not doing!"
Bob Barr, our Greeter, handled introduction of guests and Joel Doss got us singing our welcome song well enough that we didn't drive them away. Volunteers for the meeting included : Front Desk-Joel Doss, Don Glover, David King. Set Up Crew, Paul Connick and Judy Luttiken, Scribe, Sonny Googins and photographer, James Kaspar. Joe Max gave us a joke worth repeating about Scotland Yard:"Someone stole all their toilets. So, Then they had nothing to go on! "
John Kasser reported all the contributions made for the year from the Foundation: They included Scholarships to RB and Del Norte High Schools, Interfaith, Boys & Girls Club, Palomar Hospital, TLCanines, Alzheimer's Assoc.,Poway on Stage, the Music Program, Gently Hugged and more. Total $43,650; $59,600 pass through. Specific amounts will be available.
Please Note these events: Community Service Committee will meet after this meeting; We will "Adopt" Three Families: for the Holidays, the effort being led by Shirley N.
The Dictionary Project will begin n Dec. 2 at Toby's home. Labels will be put into the books.
The Abraxas Tree Project will take place at 9:00 a.m. at Abraxas High School. A sign up sheet was passed. Be There!
New Member Orientation will take place at Charlie Crew's home 4:00p.m. Nov. 16.
Honorary Mayor Reception 5:30, Nov. 14 at Bernardo Heights CC. for Scott Lawn and his opponent.
RB Community Foundation Thanksgiving Luncheon-Nov 21 at 11:00 at Rancho Bernardo Country Club, $50 cost.
November is Diabetes Awareness Month. Sonny Googins placed American Diabetes Association "Risk Tests" about the room as an opportunity to check your status , be guided by the results and see a doctor if necessary.
Dan Barrios reported on status of Paul Harris Fellows and program.
President Mike presented the Service Above Self Coin Award to Judy Luttickin for her outstanding service to Rotary.
He read a thank you note for our presentation of the Shelter Box. Jim Hyldahl and his wife vacationed in Hawaii. Jim caught a monster tuna that dwarfed both of them in a photo. No doubt a fine is in the making! Speaking of which, Fine Master John O', emptied the pockets and purses of members , proving that he deserved the mug he received from Sonny Googins that sported a calling for the Halloween theme, "More Boos Please."
Program: Bob Vaughn introduced our speaker, Kin Searcy, Senior Docent at Palomar Observatory. Has been there about 10years. Kin introduced us to the "Alphabet Soup" acronyms and terms of astronomy. Many new discoveries were made from this site and Palomar was the largest lens in the world for a time, established and run by CalTech. Celestial research brings us closer to how the universe was formed, and 'what's out there.' Research here downgraded Pluto -as no longer a Planet!
Upcoming Programs-
Nov. 9- Jackie Markt-Maloney, Voices for Children
Nov. 16- VADM Ted Blanch, USN (Ret). Drone Aviators.
President Mike's closing quote brings notice to a serious subject: "Child abuse and neglect offend the basic values of our state. We have a
responsibility to provide safe settings for at-risk children and facilitate permanent placement for children who cannot return home." Matt Blunt
Respectfully submitted,
Sonny Googins, Scribe
