Nov. 10th, 2016
Benita opened the evening meeting with a big sigh of relief that the election was coming to a close. Joe Gandelman led us in the pledge and Frances gave the Inspirational Message. We had many guests and spouses attend as the evening meeting brings out the best!
Dave Brooks continues to sell tickets for the 26th annual Thanksgiving Luncheon held the Tues. before the holiday, Nov. 22nd. The tickets are $50 and our club will have one or two tables for our members.
Diane Berry gave her Who Am I speech bringing her one step closer to her permanent badge. She had several jobs in a long and illustrious career starting with teaching and moving up to Benefits Manager at Mervyn's and on to Trans America...getting to live in beautiful Sausilito before moving to San Diego.
Mira introduced our program, Projects in Afghanistan by Fary Moini, a fellow Rotarian from the La Jolla Golden Triangle. In 2014, The Phillips Company donated 16 Neo Natal Fetal Monitoring machines saving many babies and mothers lives. In 2002, Fary was also extremely involved in another project that sent machines to Jalahabad, Afghanistan and Israel to detect and screen for cervical cancer. Israeli Dr. Bruce Kahn, an OB/GYN whose practice is here in the US actually trained other doctors in these countries via Skype. It is amazing what things can be accomplished through computers. The military helped to transport these machines at little or no cost to Rotary. Fary arranged all the details and even got trained on some of the machines so she could help out with training people herself.
Next week's speaker will be Janice Kurth, PDG speaking on The Rotary Foundation.

Luckily he printed out the words for us as it's been a while since we sang this particular song. Then Benita thanked all the volunteers that helped with set up.
Shirley is in charge of Adopt a Family and will be asking for monetary donations to help fund gifts for underprivileged families in the immediate area. This has always been an opportunity to show how generous our club is every holiday season. She also announced that our new Rotary shirts were here and would be passed out after the meeting.

This means that our club will make $24 a box which will go towards our End Polio Now committment.

Ron Hunt had laser knee surgery and is doing well. Don and Suzie Lisio are doing ok but still he still needs more time to recover from his head injury before he can join us again. Suzie is having radiation on her tumor and it seems to be shrinking which is very good news. Gary Saks talked to "Maggie" and she is home and recovering from her accident. Cards have been sent out to everyone.
