Rotary Meeting Minutes 9/24/15
President Arilla opened the meeting by thanking volunteer Shirley Napierala and Ron Hunt as greeters, Dave Brooks for an excellent Opening Inspirational Thought and John O’Neill as scribe. For the meeting set up she thanked Paul Donick, plus Sonny Googins and Joel Doss for manning the check-in desk. Also receiving kudos were our excellent club photographer, James Kaspar, club secretary Jeanne Hawkins, newsletter publisher Bill Angus and our piano virtuoso John Hawkins. Special thanks were given to Shirley for bringing a tasty chocolate cake to celebrate September birthdays. I enjoyed both of my pieces!Sonny Googins asked for our support in raising funds for the American Diabetes Association. She and many members of her family have suffered from type 2 diabetes through the years.
Please make your donations to the ADA with her team name of “Sonny Steps Out” as a notation. In our update of the Family of Rotary Report, we were informed that Jim Edwards’ condition is steadily improving, and that he will return home soon. Hurry back to Rotary Jim! The indefatigable Joe Max announced that he had turned 98 years old yesterday. It’s amazing what the care of a younger woman will do for a man…….

It’s amazing what the care of a younger woman will do for a man…….Madelyn Reina reminded everyone that she and her husband were hosting a TGIX party this coming Saturday evening at their home. Thank you both for generously opening up your home. President Arilla encouraged all members to attend the Millions for Hope Gala on October 17th, to be held in the Mission Tower at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The cost for attendees is $85 per person, $50 of which will be covered by our club. The keynote speaker will be the president of Rotary International, K.R. “Ravi” Ravindran. We as a district are honored to have our president join us, as it has been many years since a Rotary International president has been able come to us.
Finemaster John O’Neill related the story of his almost catastrophic final motorcycle ride, and then asked for Happy Bucks. Everyone must have been really happy because there was a very generous outpouring from many members.
Our speaker was Chip Dykes from the Mt. Soledad Veteran’s Memorial. Honoring veterans who have served our country is the mission of the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association. This is accomplished, in part, through the placement of black granite plaques on the walls of the Memorial. There are over 3,000 plaques honoring veterans, living and deceased, from the Revolutionary War to the current conflicts in the Middle East. The plaques on the walls tell the stories of scores of men and women from Presidents, Medal of Honor recipients, Admirals, Generals, Hollywood celebrities and thousands of others with names that are unfamiliar, but who proudly served our country to help protect the freedoms we enjoy as Americans. Chip invited all of us to come and enjoy this memorable site for ourselves.
President Arilla adjourned the meeting and announced that our speaker on October 1st will be San Diego police officer A.J. Fiorillo.John O’Neill -- Scribe
