Rotary Highlights – October 16, 2014 Meeting
President Don Glover called the meeting to order at 12:30 p.m. Jim Edwards led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and President Don gave the opening inspirational thought in place of Paul Donick. Bill Bonner had an easy job as greeter today as there were no visiting Rotarians or guests.
Don thanked today’s volunteers: Vern Cook, Bill Bonner, Paul Donick for set-up; Kathleen Smith & Rick Bramble – check in; Arilla St. Laurent - photographer; and Sandie Dewane, scribe. President Don announced that Mira Bozanich is heading up Family of Rotary so if anyone has news about our members, to let Mira know.
John O’Neill is making steady progress and we’re all looking forward to seeing him at our 50th anniversary party on December 4th.
John O’Neill is making steady progress and we’re all looking forward to seeing him at our 50th anniversary party on December 4th.Dave Brooks reported that our club will have two tables at the RB Community Foundation’s annual Thanksgiving luncheon at the RB Inn. The luncheon is the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. Any members wishing to attend should let Dave know.
Don announced that the date for volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House at Children’s Hospital is set for October 22nd. Nina Haines sent an email with directions to our club members. District Conference is set for October 24/25 in Palm Springs. We have a good number of people attending: 16 on the 24th and 14th on the 25th. Our October 30 meeting will have a Halloween theme featuring a magician. December 4th is our 50th anniversary celebration at Maderas Country Club. Benita Page reminded us that our campaign for annual donations to the Rotary Foundation begins next week.Arilla “the Hun” stepped up to the podium amidst cheers and jeers to extract some money from us. She was hoping to find Marty Judge present so she could fine him for his many appearances on TV and in newspapers. The amount of his fine continues to build – watch out, Marty! Paul Donick was fined because his cell phone went off and the rest of the funds collected were through happy bucks.
Charley introduced our speaker, Major Gift Officer Michael Dunlap who gave an informative program about major gift giving to the Rotary Foundation through Charitable Remainder Trust and Gift Annuity. He also encouraged us to look to non-Rotarians as major donors and gave examples of donors he has cultivated who were non-Rotarians, but wanted to do good in the world. Michael also had a special treat for us in that he brought a bottle of wine for everyone present. He did so at Karen Stelman’s request – thanks Karen J. Charley Crew presented the speaker gift to Michael.Next week’s meeting will begin early as Assemblyman Brian Maienschein and two fire chiefs will give a 45 minute presentation on disaster preparedness.
Bill Bonner closed the meeting with an inspirational thought.
